1 Re-Post: Can't get windows to stop giving me "not responding" error....Help Please
When I boot us and try to get to the web it doesn't work.
I keep getting the Internet Explorer.... and Explorer....are not responding so I do an End Task and try again. Doesn't work. I've booted to Dos with the recovery floppy disk and do a Scandisk /Fix and get back that Scandisk found NO Errors. Also did a Regedit /repair for good measure. Reboot and try again for the web, same problem. Back where I started. I did get an error report concerning "Escamblk.dll" ? Any help would be appreciated as the kids need this PC for homework. Thanks ! Update: 11:30pm - 4/18/2006 I decided to try one more time and this time I got onto the web. I went to download IE6 again and got the following error msg: "Win Update: Internet Explorer & Internet Tools. Setup cannot continue because files are missing from the Installation directory. Please run Setup again and choose Resume Setup. This will download the missing files and continue setup. Didn't work. Tried 2 more times and it just kept coming back to the above error response. Last time I got a Runtime Error: Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe Abnormal program termination. Then I clicked on OK and it rebooted itself. Gave up and did a shut down and sent this message via my own laptop. Thanks in advance for the help ! |

Nancy
I'm a little confused by what you say you've done.... 1) there is no such command as 'scandisk /fix' - although there is 'scandisk /f' 2) There is no such command as 'regedit /repair' - although there is 'scanreg /fix' IE and Explorer 'not responding' can be caused by a large number of things - best bet is to go into Safe Mode, and run a repair of Internet Explorer from Add/Remove Programs, and see if that helps - then try a general cleanup of the system, looking for malware..... You may have a virus/spyware hijack download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling viruses are not present on your PC http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp - update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files. download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from your system. Thanks for the reply Noel.
The "Scandisk /fix" that I did was from Dos by using the recovery disk she had to boot up with. I may be wrong on the exact words regarding "Regedit /repair" but I did that from the Dos prompt too. I tried to do all 3 repairs from Safe Mode, but I still couldn't get onto the web. She had a Spy Blocker and Pop Up Stopper on the PC. If I download Stinger and Adware and put the files on CD's will that work, since we can't get to the web to download them into her PC directly ? I had a similar problem on my old Win98SE and found that by reinstalling IE6 it cleared everything up (for awhile). So that's why I went that route. Thanks, Nancy "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Have you tried the Repair of IE while in Safe Mode??....(assuming IE6SP1 is
installed) Reboot to Safe Mode Go to Add/Remove Programs and try a repair of Internet Explorer from there. Go to the entry for 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools' in Add/Remove Programs Click on Remove - and click on Repair on the window that pops up Reboot on request to Normal Mode If the above entry isn't there, you first need to uninstall all the patches applied, then do the repair, then reapply the patches The patches are listed in Add/Remove under the names 'Internet Explorer Qxxxxxx' highlight, click Remove - reboot if requested. Repeat until the MSIE6SP1 entry appears - then repair as above. bother!! hit the wrong button....
Also.. Stinger will complain bitterly if asked to run from read-only media (it will run - but I'm not sure hw good the results are) AdAware really has to be installed to run properly. Save the installers for AdAware and Stinger to a CD, and copy them to the infested machine. Also download the latest definitions for AdAware, and save the file to the CD You 'll have to then install AdAware - and copy the new definition files to the AdAware folder created by the install. this is the method to use.... Do as follows: a.. Close Ad-Aware. b.. find the latest definition file in a ZIP format that you saved to the CD. c.. Unzip the contents of the file either with your favorite ZIP utility or the built-in support in Windows to the Ad-Aware installation directory, which usually is "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-aware SE\". d.. Open Ad-aware. e.. Confirm that the latest definition file is installed by checking out the "Initialization Status" in the main program window.
