Default DirectX 8 bug on AMD: Windows 98 users left out in the cold

There is/was a serious bug in DirectX versions 8 and up that would cause some
sort of buffer overflow when running on AMD processors. Basicly, it would
cause the computer to freeze after about 15 minutes of running any DirectX
application.
This bug apparently only happens on AMD processors.
Windows XP users got a fix very shortly after the problem was announced.
This was over a year ago. Now, there is still no patch for Windows 98.
Upgrading DirectX does not help, later versions still have this problem and
need to be patched. The only way to restore the system to normal is to
reinstall Windows 98 and DirectX 7. Unfortunetly, there are very few games
released within the past year that still use DirectX 7, they all use 8.1 and
up.

I need a patch! Does anyone know of a fix for this problem?

Ok, I've found lots more info on this problem, but still no fix for 98 users.

using VIA chipset ?

there are some known problems relating to one or all of these

This bug doesn't effect windows 98 or me users. The problem exists with the
agp function were texture and lighting is passed thru. It is actually an
interaction with the kernel and windows98 doesn't have the same kernel.

Dunno ... I'm running an AMD Xp and DirectX 8.1 and have no problems
.... of any kind. Ran DirectX 9.0 for a while and, although I switched
back, I didn't have any problems like you speak of then either.

hmm. The thing is, all my problems with freezeing in games only started
*after* I installed DirectX 8.

I have an SiS 530 videocard, 96 Mb RAM, and a 400MHz "AuthenticAMD
AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor".
I had not installed any new hardware near the time when the problems started
and they started in less then an hour after I installed DirectX 8. Even if
it's not a problem with directx itself, it is directly related to it in some
way. I have not installed any new drivers for anything for fear of setting
off even more problems.

Ok, I connected this computer to the net and got a copy of DirectX 9.0c
I also let it connect to the MS database to see if my hardware was
compatable. It preformed remarkably well, up to the point of telling me that
(with my current drivers, at least) my SiS 530 video card was uncapable of
using DirectX 9 Direct 3D. But I do have compatability with 8 now, so my bug
is gone. Hmm. I wonder if , since it now knows my video card is incompatable,
it disabled directx 9 support? if it had not done so before, it would
certainly explain all my crashes.
Thanks for your help, guys!

With some older Video Cards and DirectX sometimes version DX7/a will work and
DX8.1a/b or DX9a/b/c wont, and vicesa versa; heck sometimes updating the video
drivers can affect the outcome good or bad with any one of the above
scenarios.. ..even still you may have one particular program that won't work
with any of the above situations - where another one would.

There's no limitations as to which different scenario it could be - just use
the one that works best for you.
When it comes to older Video Cards and DirectX - the latest is not always the
bestest..
