Default Slow Startup with Windows ME

My Dell Windows ME computer takes a long time ( 5 min)
to startup. A scandisk window always pops up, with the
message that windows did not properly shutdown during the
previous session. Sometimes the computer will hang
during the startup. Once I get through a successful
start, the computer runs reasonably well as long as I
have scanned for viruses and adware. Any suggestions?

Have a look at these sites for help with programs running at start up And
further down are links to shutdown and startup problems courtesy of MikeM.

A good process viewer will tell you everything that is running, to include
background processes. Try Process Explorer, free from
www.sysinternals.com
..
CTRL-ALT-DEL will bring up the End Task window, however, it will not show
every running process. Most apps can be disabled from within the app
itself by using Properties or Settings or Options......the best way to
disable an app.
Here are some sites that will help you trim your startup axis......they
will
tell you what is needed and what is 'fluff.'

Oops: forgot the link for shutdown with my last post
Joan

Tracking down shutdown and power-off problems (they differ) can be
somewhat
difficult but may I suggest that you start by having a look at MS KB
273746 -
"How to Troubleshoot Windows Me Shutdown Problems"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=273746) and then move on to Jim
Eshelman's
pages at http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm and
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnme.htm which cover this topic. Hopefully
you
will find advice there that will help your resolve your problem.
