Default windows updates

Hi. I have win-ME and IE 6 and a 4 year old computer. I'm ready to bite
the bullet and install .net framework on my computer but I can't use the
windows update feature. When I get to the right place, it says:
Click Start, click Windows Update, and then click Product Updates for a list of available components.

When I click start, there is no option to click Windows Update or
Product Update. When I try it on the internet from this URL
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=k...=6519&sid=1020
I get to a page that ask for admin rights (?) or also tells me to click
windows update.

I'm going in circles and don't know what to do. Appreciate some help!
Thanks!!

In which case use the URL http://windowsupdate,microsoft.com or
http://v4.windowsupdate,microsoft.com

Yes. that takes me to the Administrator page (not an option in ME) and
then at the bottom says:
If the option to run as the local administrator is not available:

Click Start, right-click Windows Update, and then click Properties.
Click the Shortcut tab, and then select the Run as different user check box.

all of which options are not available to me.

Erika,

I wonder if this registry patch may help:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/UnlockNoBrowserOptions.reg
Removes the Administrator message in Internet Options

Download, right-click and select merge.

Reboot and test.

Curious with the result.

thanks for writing, Zee. I looked at that URL and I'm not getting it.
There's nothing to download or right-click. I hate to tinker with the
registry on my own!

Erika,

Try right-clicking the link and select "Save target as..."

See if you manage to download it that way.

Zee, it's not a link. It's plain text and this is what it says:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoBrowserOptions"=dword:00000000

Erika,

I meant this link:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/UnlockNoBrowserOptions.reg

Right-click it and select "Save target as".

This will allow you to save the file "UnlockNoBrowserOptions.reg" to your
PC.

After downloading, locate it and right-click it. Select "Merge", confirm you
want to merge and reboot after that.

Test.

Zee, this link looks the same as the other one to me. I did search
around the mvps site and found this:

For Windows 98 and Windows Millenium Edition

Download the controls from http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...ansi/iuctl.cab and save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Extract to."
3. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
4. Go to the location you selected and right click on the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers.htm

I see the files in the .cab file but I'm not getting any right-click
options visible to install. Any other ideas?

I appreciate the time you're taking to try to help me with this
situation. Thanks a bunch!

Erika,

Could you, please, right-click the link below:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/UnlockNoBrowserOptions.reg

You should now see a menu with an option "Save target as"?

Select it and you should now see a download popup, asking you where to save
the file...

Save it.

Now locate it and right-click it, From the menu select merge. Confirm yes if
asked for a confirmation to merge.

After merge successful, reboot and test.
