Default System performance

I have a 500mhz pen111 gateway system with 256meg of ram,
I recently hooked up to high speed cable connection and
installed a macafee firewall, my system now is freezing
up at times when using the high speed connection. When
checking my system performance I'm getting a reading of
68% resources avail. Is this to low? and if it is how do
you clear more space

68% is just fine. I would get concerned when it drops below 20%. Try
temporarily disabling your firewall and see what effect that has.

Better still, uninstall MacAfee firewall--trash it and get Zone Labs
Zone Alert. It's a much more stable utility and has gotten kudos from
Cnet, ZDnet and a variety of other sources. I currently use it and one
of the things I like about it is its flexibility to allow me to
personalize it for my needs.

A properly configured Windows 98 machines doesn't need a firewall!

If you are not running any servers (web, remote access, etc.) and don't use
file sharing there is no way a hacker can get into your machine unless
you've downloaded a trojan or have some form of backdoor installed.

Here is a bit more info:

http://grc.com/su-firewalls.htm

Note if you are running WinNT or higher OS a firewall is recommended as
there are many services running that need to be blocked.

FYI - If you are accessing the internet via DSL several DSL modems
require that file sharing is enabled. Hence, you do need a firewall
and Zone Alert's Zone Alarm is the best of these.

I use a DSL modem and don't have (and never have had) file sharing
enabled. I also find it more that a little strange that would be a
requirement to use a DSL modem. Do you have any pointers to anything that
would substantiate this?

FYI it's ZoneLabs and best can only be determined by your requirements.
What's best for me may be useless to you.
