Default Shortcut to Control Panel

Here's a tip some of you might find useful.

It adds a cascading Control Panel Menu
to the Start Menu, right beside Windows Update,
so that you can make a Control Panel selection
with 2 mouse clicks.

As you read this, do the following:

1 Right-click the Start Button and choose Explore
2 Open the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu folder.
[You should see the 'Programs' File Folder
and the 'Windows Update' Shortcut listed.]
3 Right-click and create a New folder.
Leave the New Folder highlighted and
return to this email.
4 Drag your mouse over the Class ID shown below, right-click,
and choose Copy to copy to the Clipboard

Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1y069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

5 Return to the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu folder,
make sure that the New Folder is still highlighted
(click on it once to highlight it if it is not),
and then press F2 to allow you to rename the folder.

6 Hold down CTRL and press V to copy the Class ID
as the new folder name.
The folder name should show as Control Panel, without the

Now click the Start button and check out your new feature.

If you want a shortcut to Control Panel in Quick Launch,
right-click on your new Control Panel icon,
drag and drop it in the Quick Launch area
of the Taskbar, and select "Create Shortcut".
You can now also click this to open up Control Panel,
or go in via the Start button, as you choose.

I was surprised and pleased when I created this originally,
as my new shortcut actually cascaded right from
the Quick Launch bar, listing the Control Panel items.

I suspected, however, that it was an abberation, and sure enough,
it reverted to normal behaviour once I rebooted.

Other than that one glitch, it has worked flawlessly.

Hugh, I tried this and the system gave me an error and told me that it
couldn't take the characters. What did I do wrong?

I posted this ID

Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1y069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

That lower-case y shouldn't be there - sorry - no idea how
it got there, because I cut/paste the whole thing into my post
AND
as is my normal practice, I tested it before I posted it.

It should be

Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

That did the trick. I am surprised I did not spot that lower case y and
think it was strange. Thanks for the new and exciting feature, Hugh. I
appreciate it. I now have control panel in the start menu as you said would
happen in your post. I have no need for it in the quick launch area so I did
not do that part of your post. Thanks again and have an awesome day!

Another way is to open explorer and make a folder in the start
menu and then add shortcuts to the control panel programs. This
method also works in Quick Launch..
