Default Ghost Printers

Running Win98SE. If I chose network neighborhood and the computer I am on,
the resulting window shows 6 printers! If I check for these printers in
device manager, both in normal and safe mode, I cannot find them. The
reasoin this may be an issue is that I cannot print via a newtork printer
thru tis particular computer.

How do I delete these "ghost" printers? I cannot delete while viewing under
network.

Thanks,

Danny

Start - Settings - Printers
Printers rarely show in Device Manager.
I doubt those are causing a problem with your network printing though.

What printer (brand, model) is connected to the network, and how? Is it connected
to one computer, or to a print server? Is it connected to an LPT port or a USB
port? What operating system is on the computer to which the printer is connected?
Is it a printer, or an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax? What other computers
are in this network, and what operating systems do they run? Do they all see and
print to the printer, except this one machine? Is this the only Win98 machine on
the network? Do other Win98 machines on the network, if any, print to this printer?
What are the names listed for the "ghost" printers? Do you have the drivers for the
printer installed on the 98 machine?

Printers don't appear in Device manager in Win98.
Start Settings Printers is where you should see them and be able to remove them.

Glen,

Thanks for the reply. The "ghost" printers cannot be seen using
startsettingsprinters. They can be viewed by network neighborhoodentire
networknetwork namewin98 unit. They also showed on the xp machine under
network, but I could delete them. The ghost printers are listed as printer
1, printer 2, etc. And yes, if I reboot the 98se unit in safe mode, the
printers do show under device manager. The printer is an HP7130 all in one.
It is usb connected to a base computer running XP MC2005. Using the XP
network setting wizard I created a network set up wizard. In turn, I run the
set up wizard on the Win98SE unit. All is well and all computers can see
each other after the win98 cpu reboots to complete installation. If the win
98se unit is rebooted again, it cannot see the xp machine. However the xp
unit can see and access the 98 unit. These are the only two computers on the
network, The xp machine prints fine. The printer drivers are also on the
win 98se wireless unit.

Thanks Glen,

Danny

Default Ghost Printers

Please correct me if I am misunderstanding the configuration you described:

-The only printer on the network is the HP7130 multifunction device, attached
physically via USB port to an XP-MC system.

-The Win98 computer has no printers connected to it physically.

-The Win98 computer is connected to the network (and Internet) via a wireless
connection.

-The 4 printers (ghosts) are listed in Network Neighborhood when viewed on the Win98
computer and show as being on that computer, but do not appear on the Win98 computer
in Start Settings Printers.

-The four printers can be seen in Device Manager on the Win98 computer, in Safe Mode
only (listed where in Device Manager...under what category?).

If all the above is correct, I would start by removing the four printers from Device
Manager in Safe Mode, then restart in normal mode and see if they return. It looks
like the troubleshooting will center on two things: getting the all-in-one printer
installed correctly as a network printer on the Win98 system; and getting the
apparently wireless connection configured correctly on the Win98 system, which I am
guessing may be a laptop.

My brother has a Canon all-in-one attached to an XP system, and his son's Win98
system on the network sees four printers in Network Neighborhood, attached to the XP
computer. However, he does not have the Canon drivers installed on the 98 machine
because he does not use the printer as a network printer. The 98 system has a local
printer already installed on LPT1.

You may need to remove the ghost printers in Safe Mode, and then install the drivers
and the all-in-one on the 98 system over the network, per the instructions for doing
so from H-P....which may be included with the printer documentation. I have so far
never installed an all-in-one on a network, so I can't give you any specifics.
Likewise, I have limited experience with wireless configuration, and hopefully
someone with that knowledge will post the networking problem....which seems
distinct from the printer problem, but may not be.

Glen,

Thanks for your time and the the very detailed reply. Your replay of my
situation is right on! I had already deleted the "ghost" printers on the win
98se machine under device manager while in the safe mode. They still show
under the network . They did show on the xp 05mc computer, but I was able to
delete them. This one really has me baffled. I believe that you are correct
in that it is a networking issue. The xp machine can see the win98se
desktop. The win 98se desktop shows the proper network name, but does dot
show the xp machine. All is good when the network is first setup, but after
the second reboot on the win98 unit, the problem begins.

Default Ghost Printers

Can you access files on the Win98 computer, from the WinXP computer, over the
network? Are you using a router, and do you have Internet access on both machines?
Are the workgroup names the same on both computers? Have you logged on with the
Win98 computer, or are you getting a log-in window at startup of the 98 computer and
clicking Cancel instead? Have you run the Network Wizard on the XP machine to
configure the XP firewall to allow access over the Internet? (otherwise the XP
firewall will prevent access).

Do you have a third-party firewall installed, such as Norton (Symantec), or a
third-party Internet security suite, such as Norton Internet Security, or McAfee's
version of the same? If so, uninstall the third party firewall and disable the
Windows XP firewall.

Default Ghost Printers

I am following with interest as I have a similar issue, except that the W98
machine shows 10 (count 'em) printers. I think it's associated with WPS.
The arrangement is slightly different. The W98 machine has its own,
attached, printer which shows properly and works fine. The XP machine has a
different printer physically attached as well as two shared virtual
printers. None of these are installed for the W98 machine, but they all show
in the NN window on the W98 machine. Some, not all, of the printers listed
on the W98 machine show in the XP machine, but they can be deleted.
Deleting them has no effect on the display from the W98 machine.

I think it's an installation issue. Each failed installation creates a new
printer, but I don't know where the information is stored.

In all other respects the network, and printing, work just fine.

What are the names listed for the "ghost" printers? Do you have
the drivers

for
the
printer installed on the 98 machine?

Printers don't appear in Device manager in Win98.
Start Settings Printers is where you should see them and be able
to remove
them.

Default Ghost Printers

Yes I can access the Win98 machine from the xp.

I am using a router and both computers have no issues with internet access.

Workgroup names are the same. No log on screen comes up. Network wizard
has been run from the xp machine nad is how the network set up disk was
created to install on the win98 machine.

Running Zone alram and have disabled ZA and McAfee. You can also clear the
logs for each and then attempt to access to see if either program logs an
attempt.

Thanks again Glen.

Do you have a third-party firewall installed, such as Norton (Symantec), or a
third-party Internet security suite, such as Norton Internet Security, or McAfee's
version of the same? If so, uninstall the third party firewall and disable the
Windows XP firewall.

"glee" wrote:

Please correct me if I am misunderstanding the configuration you described:

-The only printer on the network is the HP7130 multifunction device, attached
physically via USB port to an XP-MC system.

-The Win98 computer has no printers connected to it physically.

-The Win98 computer is connected to the network (and Internet) via a wireless
connection.

-The 4 printers (ghosts) are listed in Network Neighborhood when viewed on the

Win98
computer and show as being on that computer, but do not appear on the Win98

computer
in Start Settings Printers.

-The four printers can be seen in Device Manager on the Win98 computer, in Safe

Mode
only (listed where in Device Manager...under what category?).

If all the above is correct, I would start by removing the four printers from

Device
Manager in Safe Mode, then restart in normal mode and see if they return. It

looks
like the troubleshooting will center on two things: getting the all-in-one

printer
installed correctly as a network printer on the Win98 system; and getting the
apparently wireless connection configured correctly on the Win98 system, which I

am
guessing may be a laptop.

My brother has a Canon all-in-one attached to an XP system, and his son's Win98
system on the network sees four printers in Network Neighborhood, attached to

the XP
computer. However, he does not have the Canon drivers installed on the 98

machine
because he does not use the printer as a network printer. The 98 system has a

local
printer already installed on LPT1.

You may need to remove the ghost printers in Safe Mode, and then install the

drivers
and the all-in-one on the 98 system over the network, per the instructions for

doing
so from H-P....which may be included with the printer documentation. I have so

far
never installed an all-in-one on a network, so I can't give you any specifics.
Likewise, I have limited experience with wireless configuration, and hopefully
someone with that knowledge will post the networking problem....which seems
distinct from the printer problem, but may not be.

It is usb connected to a base computer running XP MC2005. Using the XP

unit can see and access the 98 unit. These are the only two computers on the
network, The xp machine prints fine. The printer drivers are also on the
win 98se wireless unit.

Thanks Glen,

Default Ghost Printers

Jeff,

I agree with you as I believe the printers are a result of each installation
of the network setup using the disk created in WXP. I can also plut the HP
all-in-one into the Win98 machine and it prints with no problem.

In my case the win98 machine cannot see the xp machine nor print via the
network.
