Default Is It a Virus"Osama found hanged"

The "Osama found Hanged" thread. I downloaded the zip file and extracted the
..exe file to the desktop and ran AVG on it which reported no virus so I ran
it and the .exe file disappeared and nothing seemed to happen. Should i be
concerned?
regards
Kim

Yes, I think so. I was going to download the .zip just to see if it
contained a virus (I would not have opened the .exe file under any
circumstance) but the web site is not working (may have been shut down). I
don't believe AVG free version updates definitions daily so a new virus
probably will not be detected for a while. You have to practice
restraint--do not fall for these ruses.

Was a stupid move I know. I check update AGV every day and there is usually
one every 2 or 3 days. I just got this from another post I done in
Microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpres "To be precise it
contains the malwa Sandbox (Scanned it with Norman Virus Control)"
Machine seem to be run OK Fingers crossed. Thanks for the links.

Your anti-virus software cannot protect you from running a malicious EXE
file (if that's what it was). Although your software might be able to
detect that the software does something nasty, in practice it is so easy to
disguise these things that you just cannot rely on it being detected. Of
course, if it's an identified trojan or virus it might be recognised by a
signature, but if it's a one-off it may not have the distribution necessary
for the AV companies to have created detection for it, or it might be too
new to be recognised.

Thanks for the info Jeff, I ran all the links that ron provided and Panda
found 1 virus (can`t remember the name) and RAV found a trojan which where
both Imunized and deleted. I think:-) Don`t no if they where anything to do
with that .exe file I opened though.

I just got htis from Tim

Reuters had a story today (in Technology).

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A virus purporting to show images of Osama Bin Laden's
suicide popped up on the Internet on Friday, designed to entice recipients
to open a file that unleashes malicious software code, security experts
said.
The virus was attached to a message that was posted on over 30,000 usenet
newsgroups and is not being spread via e-mail, said Web security vendor
Sophos.

Apparently there's a similar one about someone called Arnold committing
suicide. Modern spamming techniques mean that a new trojan or worm can be
distributed with astonishing speed, especially if the process starts with a
trojan infection that sets up a lot of user machines ready to do the
spreading on signal (I don't know whether or not this happened with osama).
Even if the AV manufacturers are on to it straight away, there will be many
vulnerable machines out there.

If you opened the EXE file, you're infected. This isn't a "virus" strictly
speaking, it's a "backdoor trojan" that allows others to access your
computer and the information on it without your knowledge. I'd suggest a
visit to one of the online virus scan tools to see if you can get rid of
it - and I'd suggest that you do it NOW.
