Default MSHTML error

Whenever I visit this site
(http://www.livejournal.com/users/xiamhardkorex) and hover
over a link explorer comes up with an error and forces me
to close IE. I would assume this is because of the 'glow'
feature on the links. However there is also a forced
close when I try to go to the windows update site. Whcih
means I can't update IE for whatever is wrong wiht the
computer. I am running Windows ME and I have internest
explorer 5.50.4134.0100. Anything that I could download
and install that would fix it. PLEASE HELP.

Also i cannot install MSN Messanger for some reason.
Thank you.

If you're still running IE5.5, I'd hazard a guess that you haven't been to
Windows Update for a while.

Go there, and install ALL the critical patches (one or two at a time!!).
What is the EXACT error message you get when you try?

that's the thing. I know i HAVE installed them before, so
I don't know what happened. It only gives the error once,
then after that IE just closes that window. I will
attempt going there now.

'Explorer has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL.
Explorer will now close.

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting you
computer.

then it closes out that window. WHY IS THIS DOINGTHIS?!?!

If you'd installed all the patches, then you would have installed IE6SP1 -
have you since reinstalled ME over itself from the CD?
If so, then you may have more problems than you realise! - post back for
help in this case.

I would try replacing the existing MSHTML.DLL file with a fresh one......
but first - how many copies of it do you have, and where?
Do a Search for files named MSHTML.DLL on your C: drive
There should be a single copy in C:\Windows\System - and perhaps one in
C:\Windows\VCM - together with the backup (compressed) copy in
C:\Windows\Options\Install or ....\CABS.
What version is the one in C:\Windows\System? - it should be the same
version as the version of IE you're running.
If different, then you need to extract a new copy from the backup - look
here for instructions

something wasn;'t letting the Ethernet Driver work.

I did a search for MSHTML and this is what came up. (I'll

MSHTMLER.DLL -5.50.4134.100
MSHTML.001 -5.50.4134.100
MSHTMLED.DLL -5.50.4134.100
MSHTML.TLB -5.50.4134.100
MSHTML.DLL -6.0.2800.1400

WINDOWS/VCM
MSHTML.DLL -6.0.2800.1400
MSHTMLED.DLL -6.0.2800.1106
MSHTMLER.DLL -6.0.2800.1106
MSHTML.TLB -6.0.2800.1106

Thank you for your continued help.

Version Soup!!
OK - at least we know where we are, now!g.
You're going to have to remove and reinstall IE - which is a fairly lengthy
and risky process so back up your data first!

Then look here for detailed instructions....

Good Luck.
