Stopping Redirects
My ISP is Peoplepc.com
If I type an incorrect web address into Firefox or K-Meleon (the two browsers I use in Win98), I am redirected to a Peoplepc search page. The url is http://peoplepc-finder.com/ (with more added). I did NOT set this up. I DO NOT want this. I want it to simply tell me "Invalid" (error messages built into the browsers). Apparently since I am using peoplepc they have this configured. How can I disable this? It's damn annoying. For one thing I am on dialup, so I have to wait for that useless page to load. Another reason, I might be searching to see if there is a webpage called (example) www.bigbrownfootball.com (which this example does take me to this annoying page). But maybe I'd like to try other extensions, such as ..net .org .info .tv etc. I have to retype the whole thing each time. Does anyone know how to disable this, or am I stuck with it because I use peoplepc? |

Does anyone know how to disable this, or am I stuck with it because I use peoplepc? Yes. But if you install the BEST browser around (let alone for 98) from www.offbyone.com, you can set up your home page in its ini file, make the ini file read only, and copy the URL of whatever page you need to access in a full-featured browser. Ob1 does not do fla**** or java****, so you will be immune to people****, but you won't be able to enjoy "web design" either, nor access your bank, etc. Making something normal the start page in FF or KM and making whatever file includes that setting "read only" may or may not work. Your other option is to write a little bat file and overwrite all the FF/KM ini settings after every session, thereby avoiding the people**** home page syndrome. Disabling javascript may or may not work. This is the SECOND outfit I have heard of that offers cheap or free dial-up to people living in remote areas or where the only internet service available is BB. At the price of annoyance. Strange days. Another option which will not eliminate it but speed it up is to have your browser "not load images" until you are done with people**** and are going somewhere else. A good browser (like Opera) can put the "show images" on/off button right on the taskbar. I also highly recommend UrlOrganizer2 (even the free URL Organizer [1] is fine). You can click on a link in it and it will open in the browser of your choice. This may or may not work depending on how clever people****ters are. http://www.urlorg.com/urlorganizer2/ -- "Anytime I hear the word "culture", I reach for my iPad." - 21st Century Humanoid |

He would get the same even using OB1, unless it has its own DNS settings, which I doubt. 98 Guy has posted a useful set of instructions about how to change your default DNS (98g - the ones you've suggested, the single-digit ones, are interesting - what are they?). In the meantime, I had had half a mind to make the same suggestion as you (thanatoid) about turning off images in order to at least make the irritating page load faster (though I suspect these days even that won't make much difference as pages are so overloaded with scripts and other things that are in the source code but don't display, these days), but turning images off and on is a more tedious process in Firefox (let alone IE) these days than it used to be in (earlier at least - not sure about the latter few) Netscape. Something seems wrong with your quoting indentations, line feeds, and
paragraph breaks, or rather, lack thereof. You may need to check its settings. thanatoid wrote: "J. P. I am sure people**** would NOT allow anyone to use any DNS than their own. You are so stupid. No ISP can prevent anyone from using any DNS server they want. They probably have them all blocked somehow. What a stupid old phart you are. I bet you miss your bum-buddy MEB. |
