Default Windows Me updates

Xpost to WinME newsgroup.

You needn't have renamed the file download for WMP update 828026.

That being said, may I ask if you've ever reinstalled WinME without first
having uninstalled IE6?

Have you ever uninstalled /any/ version of Windows Media Player via
Add/Remove Programs or Add/Remove Windows Components?

It is probably my fault but anyway first of all when I went to the
Microsoft website to download the KB837009 file. It said that it
wasn't available and to go to the home page and search for it. I did
that and downloaded KB837009. I have it on my desktop but I don't
know what you mean by root directory of C:. I copied and pasted the
file into my Drive C: into the Windows directory but when I am in
safe mode and type C:\KB837009.EXE/N:V it says it is not found. I
apologize for all this but what did I do wrong?

Assuming you do have a file called kb837009.exe in the c: drive
and it is not under any subdirectory in that drive, then you would
appear
to have the file at C:\ (that is, the root--meaning there is no
subdirectory involved.)

So, the only apparent error from what you have given us is not leaving
at least one space between the file name (which is a program name)
and the program's switch. Try copying and pasting into the Run...
dialog:

C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V

(two spaces inserted between the program name and its switch for
clarity)

Try the following to resolve the 837009 problem:

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files
(including offline files) via IE: Tools Options General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot,
keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears
Choose Safe Mode Enter.) ]

NB: Do not double-click on the downloaded file to install it cos it
won't work!

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the
root directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive).

4. Start Run type or copy/paste the following into the box:

C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V

Press [ENTER]

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and then check in at Windows Update to see if
the problem persists.

Try the following to resolve the 828026 problem:

1. Download the update using the following link, saving it to your
desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...7-211DE4BF9BD0

2. With WMP closed, double-click on the downloaded file to install it &
reboot.

Aha! Well, that's the cause of your OE Update problem, and possibly the WMP

done it:

How to Remove Internet Explorer 6 or Outlook Explorer 6 by Reinstalling

You're now suffering from what the WinME MVPs call "version hell." Here's

I'll leave you in the good hands of MVPs Noel, MikeM, et al., now. Best of

Everything was done as per your instructions. The windows updates are
working fine now. Thanks.

I have this problem with WMP. The message I get is:

The file WMP.dll has a version # of 9.0.0.3344 where 9.0.0.3075 was
expected. Windows Media player is not installed. Do you want to install the
media player from the Microsoft web site?

What do I do in this case? I don't want any more version problems.

Try the following to resolve the 837009 problem:

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files
(including offline files) via IE: Tools Options General,
then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6
Service Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving
it to your Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the
reboot, keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu
appears Choose Safe Mode Enter.) ]

NB: Do not double-click on the downloaded file to install it cos it
won't work!

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\
(the root directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive).

4. Start Run type or copy/paste the following into the box:

C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V

Press [ENTER]

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and then check in at Windows Update to see
if the problem persists.

Default Windows Me updates

the standard WMP.DLL for Win ME is 3250 - which is updated by the KB911565
patch... unfortunately, I can't find a reference for Win ME, but the Win2K
patch installs v3344, so this is likely to be the broken patch that needs
reinstalling (just checked in a system here - and it is!).

go to Windows Update Catalog, and download the patch for offline install -
search for '911565' - save it to a safe place, then boot to Safe Mode and
run the patch.
let us know the exact text of any error messages you get along the way..

If it installs OK, then download and run Belarc Advisor - and check for any
more broken Hotfixes.

That looks to me as if you downloaded the patch for Win2k/XP rather than the

WindowsMedia9-KB911565-Win9x-x86-ENU.exe come in two forms - one, which I
think is the one you have has a filesize of 2,299,656bytes , version
1.0.0.0 - the correct one has a filesize of 1,948,672Bytes and a version

In my last message I should have said Windows Media Player
9
is
the current player that I am running. I don't have much
experience in this line and I don't know where to look for
KB823353 or Q823353.

I don't much experience in this line but when I look at
the
add/remove programs it lists "windows explorer 6".

I don't see any reference to KB823353 or Q823353 in the
add/remove programs.

I only see Q823559 & KB891711.

What version of Windows Media Player (WMP) are you
running
(e.g., WMP 7)?

Outlook Express (OE): Help About Files: What

Do you find any reference to KB823353 or Q823353 in
Add/Remove
