Default Blank screen after upgrading to ie6

If i were to do the system restore to an earlier point then i would lose the
update to IE6 and go back to IE5.5. This is one thing i do not wish to do. I
think it must be hardware related as i have another machine running ME and i
upgraded to IE6 with no problem at all.

Hi
Have just recently upgraded to ie6 from ie5.5. Whenever i go for a restart i
get a blank ( black ) screen with a flashing cursor in the top left of
screen. The only way to get out of it is to press re-set button on compy or
switch off then back on again.
I am running Windows ME 4.90.3000
Thanking anyone in advance for any help

Start the computer in Safe mode, wait until the "Help and Support"
window opens and select "System Restore". Make sure "Restore
my computer to an earlier time" is selected, click "Next" and
select a restore point that predates the problem.

Ben

You need to uninstall and then reinstall IE6 and using system restore and
rolling back to before your problems started is one way of doing so.
Something that I suggested you do earlier two weeks ago but since you
reported that you were unable to uninstall IE6 using Add/Remove Programs
(which suggests something odd with your setup) then using system restore
should do this for you however a lot of time has passed since you first
reported your problem and the longer you leave it the less likely system
restore will be able to help.

Alternatively try repairing Internet Explorer. Either use Add/Remove
Programs, Select IE6 and click Remove and then select Repair from the
menu. If IE6 does not appear in Add/Remove programs repairing is a little
more complicated and you need to use Start | Run and in the box type (all
as one line):

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\Windows\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Keep the spaces (after ll32, ance, Program, rnet, EXE", /g, \IE and tall)
and also the quote marks. Now click OK and follow the prompts.

This can be done from Safe Mode.

See MS KB 194177 - "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair tool"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177). This article also applies to
IE6 although not mentioned in the article.

Hi Mike
Don't think i ever said i could'nt remove IE6 via add/remove.
Anyway have just tried the repair bit and its still the same. Am pretty sure
its hardware related so will have to live with it until i am able to upgrade
the compy.
Thanks for all your help.

Well you did say "Tried all that and still no joy." (Sun, 9 Sep 2007
06:30:01 -0700) when I first suggested that you uninstall IE6 using
Add/Remove Programs.

Personally I think it unlikely that your problem is hardware related but
then I know nothing about your PC so there may be other factors at play
that I/we know nothing about.

You seem to be saying that the computer works normally when
initially started, but fails during a warm reboot. If this is the case,
you might try hitting F8 during the restart and using "Logged" or
"Step by step confirmation" to determine where the problem is
occurring.

Thanks to all involved and i seem to have sorted the problem.
I changed the motherboard and all seems to be ok, although why it started
doing it only after installing IE6 i will never know.

Once again thank you to all

You've done it the hard way, pauly, but circumvention is one way, no doubt.
Good to know you see light at the end of your tunnel.
And you are welcome, too.

Harry.
