Default limit memory used by WIN98 DOS diskette on 2GB box?

Is there a way to limit the amount of memory that a Win98 DOS diskette will
attempt to access?

I'd like to restrict it to 1GB or less on a 2GB box.

I think DOS mode limitations restrict itself to 32M or so... you may
have wrap-around issues if sensitive capacity thresholds are crossed,
though. So far the max RAM I've worked with (and thus DOS mode'd) has
been 1G, so I don't know yet.

PCs with 1G RAM may have HDs 137G, and in that case I'd worry far
more about the risk of data corruption as DOS is limited to 137G max.

cquirke - I keep hard disk partitions under that size, and I'm only interested
in the 1st partition, so hd size has not been an issue.

My concern is using Ghost 2003, which uses Win98 DOS boot diskettes.

I just had it fail for the 1st time on a 2GB machine.

So, I'm hoping to limit the amount of memory that the WIN98 DOS boot diskette
will recognize in some fashion - but its been a very long time since I've dealt
with DOS.

Thanks, Les Caudle

It may still be an issue if the volume spans the 137G line, even if it
is under 137G in size. For example, I don't allow DOS Mode Scandisk
to write changes to E: and F: where these follow an 8G C: and 2G D:
and are (say) 182G and 8G in size, respectively.

As you say, just managing the first volume 137G should be fine...

Does Ghost take over full low-level control once it starts up, or does
it rely on DOS mode to do disk access?

IKWYM... I'd guess it would go about parameters applied to HiMem.sys,
Emm386.exe and SmartDrv. Tricky perhaps, as I suspect the range
between 1G and 2G is waay over expected parameters!

Is it not a Ghost 2003 limitation, perhaps?

I guess I'm looking for someone with experience with HiMem or Emm385 that can
guide me in setting it up so that it will only use the 1st 1GB of RAM.

Thanks, Les Caudle

MS-DOS was written to use no more than 640 kb of RAM: and HIMEM and
EMM386 allow you to use most of the first 1Mb of RAM -- which
is only 0.1 per cent of the first 1 Gb. I.e. DOS seems already
to do what you require.

Use the himem.sys file from msdos 6.22 or Windows 3.x

That will restrict it to using 64 mb of RAM.

Good luck
