Try typing "win". If that doesn't work, go to
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows 98 boot floppy. Use it to start the problem computer, insert your Windows 98 CD, type "scanreg /restore" and restore the previous registry. Thanks Ben. I restored the registry and windows still won't start. the
windows logo comes up then a dos screen with a C: prompt. I typed Win, WIN, WININIT, and "START YOU #^&*$@# !!!!!. To no avail. The last command had no chance of working but made me feel better. Copy and paste the following text to Notepad and save it to a floppy as
"a:\winboot.txt". Start the problem computer to a C:\ prompt, insert the floppy, type "copy a:\winboot.txt c:\winboot.ini" and press "Enter". Then remove the floppy and restart. To no avail. This is normal. The prompt C: indicates you are logged to C: (root directory.) The file WIN.COM is in C:/Windows You need to be logged to a file's own directory before you can run it, or else use a /Path command. Use command CD Windows to change to the folder /Windows. You can then see the various parameters for WIN.COM by keying WIN /? -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Start the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu
appears and select "Command Prompt". Then type "dir /a /s c:\vmm32.vxd", press "Enter" and see if the file really is missing. If so, you may be able to rebuild it. http://www.helpwithwindows.com/techfiles/vmm32.html Also, see if the following applies to you. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191874 Ben "bubbadillo" wrote in message oups.com...
