Can't specify static IP address
Trying to setup a simple p-p network between an XP Pro and ME machine, the ME
machine does not allow me to set a static IP address. I can't enter any digits. Any ideas how to remedy this? Thanks, Chris |

Chris,
How are you trying to alter the IP address? To manually assign an IP address: Control Panel, Network, select TCP/IP in the Configuration window (or that bound to the network card concerned if more than one TCP/IP entry), and then click Properties. Click the IP Address tab and then click the radio button "Specify an IP address" and enter the required IP address and subnet mask, then click OK and then OK again. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP allmoge wrote: Trying to setup a simple p-p network between an XP Pro and ME machine, the ME machine does not allow me to set a static IP address. Mike,
yes, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. But it won't bite - the address field doesn't accept any digits. When selecting the radio button "specify an IP address", the address fields do get kind of active, but no prompt is shown and nothing cna be entered. /Chris "Mike M" wrote: Chris, How are you trying to alter the IP address? Chris,
Silly question I know but you do have Num Lock active on the number pad when attempting to enter the IP address? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP allmoge wrote: yes, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. No Num Lock active. However, in another thread here in this forum I found a
reference to this page: www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm, which lists video as one possible culprit. So, I downloaded and installed the latest video driver (nvidia GForce 2 32 MB GTS card on a Dell 8100 comp). Now I can specify the static IP address! I won't ask what the relation is between the video and the IP address... Mike, thanks anyway for your efforts! One step closer to a working network... /Chris "Mike M" wrote: Chris, Silly question I know but you do have Num Lock active on the number pad when attempting to enter the IP address? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP allmoge wrote: yes, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. Chris,
Bad or damaged video drivers can cause many odd effects but I think this is the first time I've heard this one. At least you've now got the access you require so it hardly matters now. :-) -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP allmoge wrote: No Num Lock active. In article , =?Utf-8?B?
YWxsbW9nZQ==?= says... No Num Lock active. So, I downloaded and installed the latest video driver (nvidia GForce 2 32 MB GTS card on a Dell 8100 comp). Now I can specify the static IP address! I won't ask what the relation is between the video and the IP address... I would guess that a bad video driver would not display the configuration windows properly. I would also guess that you could have configured static IP addresses with the proper commands in a command prompt box. Nevertheless, fixing the evident problem no doubt also fixed other, more subtle problems caused by a bad video driver. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

Yeah, that's an old but very common problem. Glad you found the fix on my
