Black box in installer
Hi. My name is Bryan Baker. I'm 16 and I live in Canada. I
build a computer from scratch, and I've been trying to install windows 98 on this computer. However, every time I get to the installer, it loads to 100%. Then, the system speaker beeps, a black rectangle appears, and the system locks. I tried installing Windows 95 as well, but the same issue came up. I have found so far that it has nothing to do with the ram, everything on IDE controllers, and PCI and AGP cards. I'm not sure if it's my processor or my motherboard, although I highly doubt it since Windows XP installs and functions perfectly on me. Any idea what's going on? Thanks. |

I don't really know what is going on but it sounds like a hardware issue. I
suggest trying this. First make sure that you are installing Win98 to a separate drive or partition and you must have a FAT or FAT32 boot partition. Copy the Win98 folder from the CD to the hard drive and then boot to Command prompt only, change to this folder and run setup. If this fails, then I suggest removing all hardware except one display adapter (you mentioned 2 so I can't tell if you have them both installed) the hard drive and mouse. Pull everything else. I have often had this work and once Windows is installed, you can add the other components back on to the system - preferably only one or two at a time so that if something fails, you'll have a clue as to what is causing the problem.
