Default Me & iPOD

How do I get a driver for a Mini-iPod with a laptop using
Windows Me? Is upgrading to XP really the only option?

No, you could also switch to Windows 2000.

Thank you for the response. So what's the easiest and
cheapest way to switch from Windows Me to 2000?

Buy the operating system of your choice and install it. "Upgrading" from
WindowsMe to Windows 2000 is not supported since WindowsMe came out after
Windows XP. In some cases it works but in many it causes serious problems
or simply refuses to upgrade. If your computer's hardware will support it I
would recommend Windows XP.

So would I. XP is a dream compared to Me or 2000.

Thanks again for the follow-up. Hard to believe I'm stuck
with a system on a three year old laptop that's "too new"
to run an iPod!!

It's my understanding that you do not have to use iTunes to get music onto
your iPOD.

You should be able to use an iPOD with WinME.

If all you want to do is to add music to your iPOD, then you don't need
iTunes, and it'll work just fine, you just have to read the instructions as
to how to do it. Don't let using Windows be the deterrent to buying an
iPOD.

You should check out XPlay (formerly known as XPod).
http://www.mediafour.com/products/xpod

"Cross-platform computing is what Mediafour does best, so we're readying an
affordable new software package
called XPlay. XPlay enables iPod owners using Windows Me, 98SE, 2000 and XP
to
use the iPod for cross-platform
file transfer, play their iPod songs under Windows, and transfer their
PC-based
MP3 collections to the iPod for
on-the-go listening.

A public preview is now available. All you need is an iPod and a Windows
Me,
98SE, 2000 or XP computer with a FireWire port."

Unfortunately that choice was made for you by Apple, since they decided not
to support Windows 98, SE or Me with their product. You will note that just
about every other portable music player on the planet supports at least
Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Me with their software. And the few
who don't use MP3 or WMA format files that you can manage with Media Player
or a third-party software package like MusicMatch Jukebox.

And folks think that Microsoft is close-minded.
