Request: Win98 End of Life Update CD in ISO format?
Now that Win98 is no longer supported by MS but still has a large installed
base of machines that cannot upgrade to a newer OS, how about releasing a CD to update the existing installations to the final level of O.S., DirectX, and security patches in a downloadable ISO format for end users and techs who need to work on these "unsupported" systems. If you released something similar to the 2004 security update CD that would be greatly appreciated. Request: Win98 End of Life Update CD in ISO format?
I will soon have to reinstall Win98 and WinMe on two machines that cannot be
upgraded to WinXP (reinstallation is needed because I'll need to reformat the hard disks). Since security patches (until now) are not on the original disks, and since Windows 98 and Me are no longer supported, where will we be able to find the updates ? I see that "Windows update" still works today (July 12, 2006) for Win98. Will Windows update remain active (even if no new patches are released) for some time for Win 98 and Win Me ? If not, will an archive site be available with cumulative patches ? Updates are still available at Windows Updates - but you may need to install
IE6 first.... you can download that (or use an AOL disk for the purpose! - they do have uses apart from coasters! g)....look here http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Paul (Bornival)" wrote in message ... Request: Win98 End of Life Update CD in ISO format?
Thank you very much. This will indeed be very useful sicne IE6 will not be
on the original disks. By the way, and even though this is off topic, may I ask you an advice about IE. I have one computer (Win XP) on which IE is no longer able to access Internet (and always opens the page "The page cannot be displayed". This is NOT a general Internet access problem because *all* other programs do have a normal access to Internet (FireFox, Eudora, Windows Update, etc...; I checked that ping, tracert, telnet etc... work fine and find what they need to find). The problem must be in IE. I ran various antispyware and antimalware but to no avail. I made also an "sfc /scannow" but did not find anything wrong. I was thinking about re-installing IE. Any other suggestion ? Sorry if this is off topic. All I can offer you is a good Belgian beer whenever you come over or I do see you where you live, but if you like it... No problem -
Try this on the XP machine (assuming it's SP2) - Start|Run type NETSH WINSOCK RESET then click OK - and reboot try IE then, and see if it helps -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Paul (Bornival)" wrote in message news Thank you very much. Thank you very much for your fast reply. I'll try this in a few days (the
machine is not mine but my son's ...) and keep you posted on the results.
