Default Windows 98SE Hangs or Fatal Exception 0E on Shutdown or Reboot

OS: Windows 98SE, Pentium-III Class CPU, 320 M RAM, WD 80 g HDD
supported by Adaptic Ultra 115 card, Netopia ADSL Modem (Earthlink DSL).

Hello,

As stated previously, I solved the Windows Explorer opening to the
....OOB\Setup folder on bootup. I solved this by formatting and
reinstalling everything. (My System key specs are listed above fyi).

Now, I have another problem. Windows hangs on shutdown, or reboot.
Sometimes it throws a Fatal Exception 0E at 018F:BFF9DFFF etc my way.
I've just come back from searching MSKB. Either I am imputing lousy
search terms or I'm just not finding something that clicks. One thing I
can tell you is that my Symantec Symvnt files are up to date, and I
haven't put any folder names in my Autoexec.bat PATH=... statement that
match dos or windows drivers.

I'd be most thankful if you'd help me hone in on this one.

Definitely try... "START button, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button".
Check "Disable fast shutdown", if there. The item won't be there, if you
have downloaded a certain patch from Windows Update.

Please note that exception errors in a memory range such as this...BFF9DFFF ....may
be due to video driver problems. Try reinstalling or updating your video drivers.

Thought. Install "Belarc Advisor" (freebie) at http://www.belarc.com/
and note which W98se updates are incomplete. Complete them. Also take a
direct look at "ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down Correctly"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=273017 You might have this timing
problem.

Thanks Bill, but I am definitely getting the Blue Screen of Death 0E
intermittently on shutdown and sometimes on reboot. If scandisk is
running it is because my computer crashed on shutdown.
