After seeing the lack of messages in other Newsgroups I
assume that at some point older posts are either thrown away
or archived. If they are archived is there a way to access
them?

Have you tried Google groups yet? They use to be known as DeJau news or some
such spelling, it is been too long and I just don't remember the spelling

Use Google Groups - Advanced Search
(http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search). The Microsoft news
server retains messages for around 60 days.
