Default Explorer.exe error

When I start my computer it brings up the error "Explorer
caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.exe ..."
then goes to a blank desktop.

Shortly before the problem occurred, Ne****ch.exe was
deleted. I'm assuming this must have caused the problem.
Is there any way I can just restore that file?
I've tried using http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;191609 to no avail. I'm not really sure what
I should do now. I do not have a copy of the Windows98 CD.
I have the product key but my computer did not come with a
CD.

Look on your hard drive for a folder named c:\windows\options\cabs or
perhaps c:\windows\options\install. If that exists and it contains a
large number of .CAB files (30 or more) then those are the source
files for Windows 98 that were copied from the CD.

How long has it been since this problem started? It might be possible
to fix it by restoring a backup registry.

Ne****ch.exe is associated with the MiMail.C worm/virus and therefore
it should have been deleted.

Turn on the computer and press the Ctrl key just as soon as the first
information of any type shows on the screen. Hold it down until the
Windows Startup Menu appears and then choose "Command Prompt Only"
from the menu.

When it stops at the C:\ prompt enter the following two commands:

SMARTDRV
SCANREG /RESTORE

Choose the most recent registry backup that is dated prior to the
onset of your problem and restore it.

If the registry backup is more than 10 days old it is probably not
advisable to restore it. If that is the case, or if there are no
registry backups at all, then quit Scanreg and enter the following
command:

SCANREG /FIX

That will try to repair the existing registry, which might allow the
computer to boot.

Another approach that might help:

1. On a functioning computer download Stinger (free) from
vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and copy the downloaded file to a 3.5 inch
diskette.

2. Boot the problem computer into Safe Mode. Turn it on and press
the Ctrl key as described above on this time choose Safe Mode from the
menu.

3. When it has finished booting into Safe Mode insert the diskette
with Stinger on it and run it to check your computer for the most
common of the current crop of viruses.

Good luck
