Default Scandisk won't run

Installed a new motherboard (ASUS P4B) and had to remove/reinstall
Win98. I now have DOS 7.1 aboard but no Windows at all. Can't get
the Win98 to install because for some reason SCANDISK won't run.
If I call it, the first line appears and it hangs. Ctrl-C and
Ctrl-Break have no effect. Have to reboot, which brings me back
to DOS but.... Scandisk still won't run.

This is a catch-22. What now? HELP!

Hi Dick,

Create a new startup disk and boot to the floppy and try
running scandisk from there.

If that doesn't work it could be a non standard cluster size for that
partition.
Check the cluster size, run Chkdsk at the DOS prompt and look for "Bytes in
each
allocation unit" and "Total disk space" then compare it with the table
below.

The following tables lists the default cluster sizes used by the FAT32 file
system.

Partition size Cluster size
-----------------------------------------------------------
512 MB to 8,191 MB 4 KB
8,192 MB to 16,383 MB 8 KB
16,384 MB to 32,767 MB 16 KB
Larger than 32,768 MB 32 KB

.

Just a passing thought, buddy, but did you successfully
format the Hard Drive before reinstalling? or is your
installation disk completely clean? Small stuff like that
counts.
