There are other web archives of usenet posts. Even if you need Google to send
posts, it might be worth using another service to view them, one with less
clutter and a simpler interface. Finding these services is fairly easy, just
search on Google (all web) for some obviously rare phrase in a recent usenet
post that you can see, have a look at the various services that give results.
Try setting the search terms to limit to the past day, or the past hour, to
test which services are updated quickly. Then just pick one you like the look
of.

That trick also works well for mailing lists, where some services even let
you reply to the list. (Possible even if you are not signed up to it, but I'm
not sure about that). Most of these services are view-only, whether for
usenet or for mailing lists.

Try viewing the source of a page. (Most browsers can do this via a right-
click on the page area). I've seen a few web pages show blanks recently,
while having source code. Don't blame the browser. If a browser works most
times in a complex world of (often broken) code it's safe to assume that if
the code is broken enough, the browser can't cope no matter how good it is.

It is often possible to read paragraphs of text in the source code anyway,
but it can be irritating wading through reams of crappy source code to find
them!

Wow! true to form google finally fixed the problem. Today can view
and respond again!

Regarding the html source view. very cluttered and very interesting.
Thanks for the 'heads up' on being able to do that. good way to get
at the EXACT website addresses.

That's sad that you experience usenet through google-grops.

When using a proper usenet client combined with a free server is so easy
to do and results in a much better experience.

Indeed. I found it useful for direct SWF file downloads to file... Copy,
paste into a new plain text file, into an HTML link structu
A HREF="CopiedURLgoesHere.com/Whatsit.swf"Click me, for I am linkage/A
Save that, rename as sdfg.HTM, open a in a browser, RIGHT-click, save target
as....

It sounds cumbersome, but it's a totally memorable method, nearly always
works regardless of changes in OS's, browsers, and web server code over
decades, and beats fumbling for an 'easier way' when that fumbling usually
takes more time than directly applying this method.

I have used the same method. The one thing it doesn't work with is
streaming links - something like rtp:// or whatever.

True. Though what does? I remember there was a Perl-based GetIplayer or
some such, used for BBC content, mainly to fetch the higher quality AAC from
the iPhone feeds rather than the lesser stuff usually made available. it was
a running battle for the coder, trying to keep up with the BBC's changes.

Browser links to direct download of files usually depend on a declared size,
a finite file. Streams are different enough that special buffering must be
arranged at both ends, and very time-dependent processing must be used to get
them. There is also a lot of content-policing going on too. (And to some
extent, that's true even for SWF files).

I don't know why so many people seem to gravitate to eternal september,
with the log-in bull**** it requires.

Why don't you simply use a server that doesn't require login
authentication - like news.aioe.org?

nor more importantly reply through it, keep getting kicked
back.

It's your own fault for not using a better (more ergonomic) server like
AIOE instead of a stupid-ass server like maternal september.

No log on for me, they just keep sending them the second I get on line
with auto updates every 5 minutes.

That's one of the problems, if you don't keep up you drown

I thought you recommended to try e-s
