Default Unable to connect to Hardwired Lan with Win98 SE

MEB,
On the Firefox Proxy settings, do I need to leave
No Proxy for: localhost, 127.0.0.1?

I got NoScript installed on Firefox. I had it installed on my laptop, but
disabled it because it popped up constantly. Maybe I should revisit that
decision.

My Internet Explorer is Version 5.00.2614.3500. Perhaps that is why the
Microsoft Updates didn't work? I found on the General Forum a link to IE6.
It says it is compatible with Win 98 so is that the version I should
download? After I get a compatible Internet Explorer, I'll try again on the
Microsoft Updates.

What does mdgx.com/hosts.htm do? You referred to it as a HOSTS file.

Do I need all 3 Avast providers? Web Shield, Standard Shield and Internet
Mail are the ones I have active.

In my Add/Remove Programs I show Adobe Flash Player ActiveX, but not Flash 9
or Sun Java. So I'll find those and get them downloaded as well.

Thank you so much for your help!
Martha

| discovered games on the internet.

That may be a problem. Most online games require FLASH and other programs,
including updated JAVA.
You can use FLASH 9 and SUN JAVA, but these are old versions and may not
support what the kids need.

Make SURE they only use FireFox and that you have install a plugin called
NOSCRIPT so certain issues [like highjacking] can be avoided.
Make sure to pre-setup their access as they are IN your network, and what's
IN the network can infect the rest.
INSTALL SpyWare Blaster and update it. It takes no memory, but blocks lots
of things via the registry.
Get a HOSTS file and install it in the Widows directory.. I use one from
MGDx
http://www.mdgx.com/hosts.htm

| Internet Explorer for the Avast, but on Mozilla Firefox, I wasn't sure.
Here
| is a picture of my Firefox Network setting.
| . Is it set correctly? My
| email is POP3.

Use the Manual Proxy 127.0.0.1 Port 12080 for HTTP, FTP, GOPHER. AVAST! does
not do SSL without installing other programs.
OR try Auto-detect in FireFox AFTER configuring IE to the AVAST! proxies.
If it doesn't work use the above.

|
| My Linksys WRT610N Router states it has a powerful Firewall. From what
you
| said, I still need to install a firewall on my Win 98 (HP) computer? For
| performance reasons I don't want to install any more programs than I
really
| need.

Unless it is a software filewall, it will not monitor the programs
attempting to use the Internet or called from the Internet.
Though claiming firewalls or firewall protection, routers and NAT devices
provide only address monitoring. Anything coming from an Internet address to
the local address, related to an address {local or Internet}, or from the
local address will pass through them.

|
| I tried to do a Windows Update, but apparently they are no longer offering
| Win 98 SE updates. I found an *unofficial* website

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Use IE to do the updates. It requires at least IE5.1 or 5.5 to connect.

|
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...s-SE-Service-P
ack.shtml. Would you recommend me using this site?

USE windowsupdate. Though thousands have used that update [and I have tested
it} or others [which I have also tested], they generally include
modifications which may cause problems or be incompatable with some of your
programs.

|
| Thanks for your help!

Good luck,,, get something like an old version of Kerio PF/Tiny [takes
about 1.8 megs memory] or another older firewall, NOT Zone Alarm though.
Here's some information:

The links on that page provide some additional information on what you might

| No Proxy for: localhost, 127.0.0.1?
|

Mine contains sites that will not allow proxy or are SSL
live.com,msn.com,hotmail.com
{Microsoft doesn't like FireFox} if you don't have Live or hotmail then
leave it blank or add what is needed.
You MAY want to add your local network - something like 192.168.1.0/{port#}
but do so only if needed.
AVAST! already has a localhost *allow* in its settings. Once the proxy is
called AVAST! settings take over.

|
| I got NoScript installed on Firefox. I had it installed on my laptop, but
| disabled it because it popped up constantly. Maybe I should revisit that
| decision.

Take would be a good idea.
Recently sites have been exposed for using "clickjacking" on their sites,
in addition to other aspects which NOSCRIPT monitors.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1972&tag=nl.e539 - clickjacking
*IF* you find a site which you will ALWAYS trust [and make SURE these are
ONLY trusted sites - not gaming sites unless you have check them yourself,
yeah takes some research by you, try Google and elsewhere for warnings
concerning a site], then right click the circled S [lower right corner] when
on the site and click always allow.
*IF* you contact a site and need to temporarily allow scripts, right click
the circled S and click temporarily allow.
*IF* you access a site and KNOW ITS BAD then right click the circled S and
click always disallow.
As you can see, the ability to allow or disallow PER EACH SITE makes this a
great security tool, as part of your layered security setup.
MOREOVER, since the kids will be using this computer its best to disallow
their ability to mess up your network.

Here's another suggestion:
Once you get the OS updated and everything setup [before the kids mess it
up], image/backup the disk [used sectors] to one of the other networked
computers. This will allow you to re-install a clean system when the kids
inevitably mess up the original one. Its SOOOOOOO much easier, and the kids
will never get yelled at [you probably wouldn't do that anyway grin]

|
| My Internet Explorer is Version 5.00.2614.3500. Perhaps that is why the
| Microsoft Updates didn't work? I found on the General Forum a link to
IE6.
| It says it is compatible with Win 98 so is that the version I should
| download? After I get a compatible Internet Explorer, I'll try again on
the
| Microsoft Updates.

Though you can use that version, IE6/OE6 does include additional system
fixes and does seem to allow more users to access windowsupdate.
Note though, if you use tweakui, IE6 will break your ability to remove
shortcut arrows on Shortcuts. If you never installed tweakui then don't
worry about it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...b-20b602228de6 -
IE

Also Note: Though you will have the last version of IE for 98SE, it has
received numerous CRITICAL updates after end of support for 98. Recently
found vulnerabilities would make it a bad choice to allow or use on the
Internet. After updating it and the OS, block its access to the Internet in
your firewall.

|
| What does mdgx.com/hosts.htm do? You referred to it as a HOSTS file.

The HOSTS file is used whenever a network connection is made or web site is
contacted. It contains allowed and disallowed entries by site/address which
helps to keep you [and particularly the kids] from accessing those known bad
sites, or those sites using links to force malicious site activities,
advertising, and other into your computer/network.
When the site is blocked or an element within the site [except cookies
which you will not see blocked] you will see a warning that particular page
or element could not be displayed [a red X or other indications]. You should
also note that some web pages will not display correctly because they use
CSS or other aspects [like scripts] from know third parties who have been
determined as malicious, use tracking techniques, or inject other potential
issues into their web pages which might harm or damage your computer and
network.
IF you find one of your trusted sites blocked, search for its entry in
HOSTS. If its there and you are SURE its safe then comment out its entry.

|
| Do I need all 3 Avast providers? Web Shield, Standard Shield and Internet
| Mail are the ones I have active.

I would suggest leaving them active, though some claim the Internet Mail
can be disabled. I disagree since it uses its other data bases to check
against for potential malicious activities, not just looking for normal
email inclusions..
I would NEVER leave a computer that children use unprotected.

|
| In my Add/Remove Programs I show Adobe Flash Player ActiveX, but not Flash
9
| or Sun Java. So I'll find those and get them downloaded as well.

Make sure to uninstall the old Flash before installing the new. You will
likely need Adobe Shockwave as well.
You will need to look for the last versions for these which work with 98, as
the new versions will not install.
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashp...fo/systemreqs/
http://www.adobe.com/products/shockw...fo/systemreqs/
Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0.16) SUN JAVA
Make sure you use the Control Panel JAVA setup and disallow most of the JAVA
activities.

Default Unable to connect to Hardwired Lan with Win98 SE

| MEB,
| On the Firefox Proxy settings, do I need to leave
| No Proxy for: localhost, 127.0.0.1?
|

Mine contains sites that will not allow proxy or are SSL
live.com,msn.com,hotmail.com
{Microsoft doesn't like FireFox} if you don't have Live or hotmail then
leave it blank or add what is needed.
You MAY want to add your local network - something like 192.168.1.0/{port#}
but do so only if needed.
AVAST! already has a localhost *allow* in its settings.

|

|

|

|

|

Make sure you use the Control Panel JAVA setup and disallow most of the JAVA
activities.

|
| Thank you so much for your help!
| Martha

Your welcome, we should be done if you've looked at all the pages/links
I've supplied and made the updates, installations, and changes.
As the networking issues are finished, if you need more help please post

| | I have an HP 8760C Pavillion with 448 MB Ram and 733 MHz Processor
Intel
| | Pentium III. I will be using it for my 5 & 6 year old grandsons that
have
| | discovered games on the internet.
|
| That may be a problem. Most online games require FLASH and other
programs,
| including updated JAVA.
| You can use FLASH 9 and SUN JAVA, but these are old versions and may
not
| support what the kids need.
|
| Make SURE they only use FireFox and that you have install a plugin
called
| NOSCRIPT so certain issues [like highjacking] can be avoided.
| Make sure to pre-setup their access as they are IN your network, and
what's
| IN the network can infect the rest.
| INSTALL SpyWare Blaster and update it. It takes no memory, but blocks
lots
| of things via the registry.
| Get a HOSTS file and install it in the Widows directory.. I use one from
| MGDx
| http://www.mdgx.com/hosts.htm
|
|
| | The only time I will plan to use email is
| | to transfer an occasional email down to the HP (like the Avast
| Registration
| | number). I adjusted the Avast so that the only services a
Internet
| Mail,
| | Standard Shield and Web Shield. Is it safe to assume I need all of
those?
| | I'll see if that helps the performance. I found where to configure my
| | Internet Explorer for the Avast, but on Mozilla Firefox, I wasn't
sure.
| Here
| | is a picture of my Firefox Network setting.
|
|
| |
From
what
| you
| | said, I still need to install a firewall on my Win 98 (HP) computer?
For
| | performance reasons I don't want to install any more programs than I
| really
| | need.
|
| Unless it is a software filewall, it will not monitor the programs
| attempting to use the Internet or called from the Internet.
| Though claiming firewalls or firewall protection, routers and NAT
devices
| provide only address monitoring. Anything coming from an Internet
address to
| the local address, related to an address {local or Internet}, or from
the
| local address will pass through them.
|
| |
| | I tried to do a Windows Update, but apparently they are no longer
offering
| | Win 98 SE updates. I found an *unofficial* website
|
| http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
| Use IE to do the updates. It requires at least IE5.1 or 5.5 to connect.
|
| |
|
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...s-SE-Service-P
| ack.shtml. Would you recommend me using this site?
|
| USE windowsupdate. Though thousands have used that update [and I have
tested
| it} or others [which I have also tested], they generally include
| modifications which may cause problems or be incompatable with some of
your
| programs.
|
| |
| | Thanks for your help!

|
| Good luck,,, get something like an old version of Kerio PF/Tiny [takes
| about 1.8 megs memory] or another older firewall, NOT Zone Alarm though.

|
| The links on that page provide some additional information on what you
might
| want to do.

| |
| | How much memory do you have? And how fast a processor?
| |
| | You can shutdown some of the services in AVAST! if your not using
them,
| | like P2P, Outlook/Exchange [not OE or other mail programs], and
Instant
| | messaging,
| | You WILL need to configure your browsers to use a proxy[AVAST] at
| 127.0.0.1

can
| be
| | monitored and checked for bad stuff. It handles POP3 and IMAP

| | | | MEB,
| | | | THAT DID IT! I can connect to the internet!!! I did what you
| said
| | and
| | | | uninstalled everything under Network of the Win98 system.
Then
| | rebooted.
| | | It
| | | | discovered the new hardware and asked me to insert the disk
| labeled HP
| | | | EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter Driver. All I
have
| are
| | the 3
| | | HP
| | | | System Recovery Disks. I had used the first 2 Recovery Disks
to
| | | | reformat/reload Win98. The 3rd Disk said Application
Recovery. I
| had
| | NOT
| | | | loaded it on my reload. So, in looking for a disk that might
have
| the
| | | | adapter drivers, I inserted the first 2 to no avail. Out of
lack
| of
| | | anything
| | | | else to do, I inserted the 3rd disk. Up popped a folder
labeled
| | DRIVERS.
| | | So
| | | | I opened it and found the driver and installed it. Then it
asked
| for
| | the
| | | Win
| | | | 98 SE disk. So I inserted it. Then I rebooted. And then I
| plugged
| | back
| | | in
| | | | my ethernet cable to the router and fired it up. AND IT
WORKED!!
| My
| | best
| | | | guess is that I didn't have the driver installed to the
adapter.
| | | |
| | | | THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
| | | | My problem is resolved thanks to you!
| | | | Martha
| | |
| | | I'm happy it worked out for you, thanks for posting back.
| | |
| | | I note that you used the system restore disks [dated/old
files], I
| | would
| | | recommend going to the windows update site and make sure you are
up
| to
| | date
| | | {or at least as of end of support 2006} for the system.
| | | DO NOT use any of Microsoft's "drivers" if they still offer
them...
| | just
| | | update the system and IE/OE so what security holes Microsoft
fixed
| are
| | at
| | | least installed in your system.
| | | MAKE SURE you install a firewall and Anti-Virus in 9X before
using
| 9X
| | on
| | | the Internet ANYWHERE beyond windowsupdate, and at least
something
| like
| | | SpyWare Blaster for some of the other issues. Even if you aren't
| going
| | to
| | | use the 9X system on the Internet, as it is attached to the
router
| and
| | part
| | | of your network, it can be attacked, so make sure to protect it.
| | |
| | | If you want more or specific recommendations, please post in
the
| | | microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion group, and we will help to
| advise
| | on
| | | those issues.
| | |
| | | Again, thanks for posting back with the success.
