A second oppinion from you all..Please!
"PA Bear" skrev i meddelandet ... This thread so far: http://snipurl.com/832f I commend you for the volunteer work you're doing, Gunilla. Oh thanks PA. It is easy and nice to do when knowing that someone will be happy and pleased, just as it must be for you all MVP's and others when getting good credit for all your support here in the NG's. Unfortunately not all people show their appreciations. I find you experience surprising. Returning to FAT32 from NTSF is usually fraught with problems, if it's possible at all, Gunilla. I shall attempt to entice one or two MVPs, more-experienced than me, to contribute to this thread. Let me just say that I am certainly not an expert who can go into a discussion about what is right or wrong and especially not if it contains difficult words but I can say as much that I have done it and also people I know without to have any problems. I once got an extra HD from our Tax-office, they are selling them cheap when changing, and that was a NTFS but that time I had still Win98, so I changed the HD to FAT32. No problem with that, but it is not the same HD I am using now. BTW...thank you for correcting the misspelled word! :-)) And of course, I think if there is morte experienced than you, they must be quite a few. Cheers, Gunilla. -- ~Robear CC: MVPs more-experienced than me eg Gunilla wrote: Hello again. Okay, I have a lot to learn but do you know that I am not so willing to give up on this OS, not quite yet. I must learn about it, I must learn how to troubleshoot XP. Seriously, the Swedish foundation for kids who is suffering from cancer belongs to my volunteer jobs and we are supported with old (not too old, 2-4 years) PC's from business/companies all over Sweden and Microsoft is supporting us with all from Win98 (not that much now) WinXP, Win2k and Ms Office2000/2003 and our job is to manage these PC's and that is to take away the OS Win NT4 (which is on all the PC's from the beginning) by either the WinXP CD or by a start-up disc and running fdisk, reformat and give the HD either FAT32 or NTFS all depending on what OS there is to be. When all is finish we give families/those kids a complete PC package. Then we are putting in what ever there needs to be changed all from video-cards, Network-cards, sound-cards and etc...etc. That is why I need to learn about every OS because how could I be good at manage those things if I don't know how things is working. And I suddenly realized that a new video-card and more RAM needs to be installed on my PC as well because this reply has been taking more than half and hour to write because of all mess with frozen applications, multiple windows pop-ups and stuff that always happen when I try to write anything. Sorry for the length in this post, just wanted to explain a little. :-) BTW I read in that link from Aumha. Did it mean that there can be problems doing that return back to FAT32? I have made it on other HD-D's and never heard about problems, or experied some myself...maybe it doesn't have to be a problem? -- [förlåt!] And sometimes you're just throwing good money after bad. In the long run, maybe it'd be best to just buy a new PC with WinXP installed, Gunilla. If you've converted to NTFS, returning to Win98 and FAT32 is questionable at best. See http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfs.php#convert I've found WinXP much more satisfactory than Win98. Have you considered switching to Classic View? You may find things easier and more familiar. Unless you truly needed what WinXP Pro has to offer, you probably would've been better off (and more satisfied) with WinXP Home. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Alex Nichol, who wrote that page at aumha.org, responds: "The only tool I know that tries to do the NTFS to FAT 32 conversion is Partition Magic 8.01 That is said to be able to do it, provided that there are no folders/files compressed with NTFS compression (you are likely to stumble over $NTUninstall ones for uninstalling Hotfixes) and no files that have been encrypted with the Encrypting file system. Those must be restored to uncompressed unencrypted form first. And I think it might stumble over handling some of the NTFS access control settings. "Basically I would say - do not convert until you are certain you will be happy with the result, or have a complete backup from which the partition could be rebuilt. "I think the question has to be how was this achieved? Win98 of course does not support NTFS and the only normal way to revert would be to delete the partition and a clean install. So what other steps are claimed?" Converting back to FAT32 may not be a problem if there's no data on the hard drive which you need to have available after the conversion when you return to Win98, Gunilla. This sounds like it was the case in your previous scenarios [scenariae?] but not now. -- ~PA Bear Gunilla wrote: "PA Bear" skrev i meddelandet ... I know a guy who converted back to FAT32 when having folders and files on the HD but that HD was just used as an extra storage. I got that HD and had it on my old PC but I had the OS (Win98) on my other HD, if you know what I mean. This you wrote above applies to how I did...no data was ever on that HD since the IT Technicians had already formatted the HD's before selling them. Thanks, interesting to have others oppinions. I am so curious about it so I just got to try with a spare-HD I got. I will be back with the results but it might take some days. Gunilla. -- ~PA Bear Gunilla wrote: "PA Bear" skrev i meddelandet ...
