Restore broken?
Mike:
Tks for response. Tried your first suggestion: Disable System Restore - it did make a System Check Point. Now my Restore system looks: (IN THE C:\_RESTO BEFORE AFTER Temp 4607 files 286 MB 8 files 160 KB Archive 32 " 85.6 MB 1 " 11.7 KB win386.swp 124 mb 86 MB Will watch it for while, see if any automatic System Check Points. If not will try your second suggestion: Clear the archive and rebuild the control files". Will report progress. Paul -- cogito ergo sum "Mike M" wrote: PAT (Paul) wrote: Any reason why I would leave 4,707 files and 85.5 MB which are the same ones staring at me forl the last two years...wouldnt this be a candidate for your routine about the System Restoone, which unfortunately I cant put my hands on?? BG Paul, In case that message was addressed to me rather than Tom. That you have 4.707 files totalling 85MB "stuck" in the archive and that won't clear by resetting system restore ( System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting, check "Disable System Restore", immediately reboot and then back to Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable System Restore" and once again reboot) could well be due to having had a Symantec/Norton product involved. Clearing and resetting system restore may well be the solution but may not fix the problem of Avast preventing the creation of automatic system restore checkpoints. So to to clear the archive and rebuild the control files I would suggest the following: a) Boot to DOS using a floppy. Do NOT choose "Minimal Boot" from the menu when booting from a floppy but rather choose "Start computer with (or without) CD-ROM support" otherwise the ATTRIB command will not be available. b) At the DOS A:\ prompt, type: ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\_RESTORE then REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST c) Remove the floppy d) Reboot your PC e) Delete the folder C:\OLDREST f) Check that an automatic system restore checkpoint was created. g) Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder: System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider to your preferred setting. A figure of 200MB is normally more than adequate for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to be available although increasing this to perhaps 400MB for a few days during periods of large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable. It might now be a good time to test that system restore is working correctly. You can do this by performing the following test. a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file. b) Create a manual checkpoint Could you create a checkpoint? c) Delete the shortcut d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created. Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages? e) Reboot your PC Was the checkpoint retained? -- Mike Maltby |

Restore broken?
Paul,
So disabling and then re-enabling system restore cleared the archive. That's good. What I don't understand is why you posted details of the size of the swap file since this has nothing to do with the operation of system restore or are you saying that the system restore archive contains a copy of the swap file?. Will watch it for while, see if any automatic System Check Points. If not will try your second suggestion: Clear the archive and rebuild the control files". Will report progress. Nothing I posted will alter the fact that when running Avast no automatic system restore checkpoints will be created. Others have tried including TomV and got nowhere. The problem has been acknowledged by Avast. Cheers, -- Mike Maltby PAT (Paul) wrote: Mike: Tks for response. Tried your first suggestion: Disable System Restore - it did make a System Check Point. Restore broken?
Mike,
Re Swap file, havent the faintest idea why. Re restore points: I'll put them in regularly, and since AVAST acknowledge the fact, will have to live with it. Cheers. Paul -- cogito ergo sum |
