Default Minor, but annoying problem

I have an older Gateway 800 machine, running Win98SE, that I networked into
my LAN for backup purposes. About one out of six starts, the display comes
up at 800 x 600. I have it set for 1024 x 768. I can reset it and
everything is fine. But then eventually at startup it will revert back to
the 800 x 600.

I have a 17 inch LCD monitor that I use with a KVM switch to view my main
computer and the backup computer. I only use the Win98 computer (two hard
drives) to backup personal files on the second hard drive from my main
computer and my wife's computer. Then once a month I copy these files to
CDs

Does anyone have any ideas why the monitor resolution would change on
startup, but not every time?

My guess is that the first half of the first sentence in your second
paragraph says it all. If Windows detects anything different about hardware,
it tends to revert to default settings. KVM switches are known to often be
difficult to manage. I can only offer the usual advice. If you can, test the
situation without the KVM switch in the mix (preferably using the same
monitor.) If the problem disappears, then you'll have to review the
literature regarding your specific model of KVM switch. If the problem
remains, try a different monitor.

Do you see two monitors in DM ??? Do you have "automatically detect
PnP monitors" checked in Display Properties ???
