How do I remove program icons from the desktop without
deleting the programs(.exe files) themselves?

Right-click the shortcut icon and select Delete. You can right-click the
icon and look at Properties to confirm it is the shortcut and not the EXE
that you are deleting - the Type will be shortcut.
