Default Only 16/256 colors for 65545 Chips & Tech. video card

Hi,

I've got an old laptop, AcerNote Light 350PCX. It has a
65540/545 Chips and Technologies video card. In windows
95, I can get it at 16bit color no problem. However, in
Windows 98, with the 65545 driver that comes with windwos
98 I can only get 16 colors! I tried the Chips and
Technologies Super VGA driver instead and I've got 256
colors. However I can't seem to find a driver that will
give me 16bit color.

What can I do? I've tried all the drivers I could find on
the internet and none seem to work. Is there a general
driver someone can give me like a Super VGA driver that
has 16bit color support?

Intel seems to know this problem, and I tried their
solution but it doesn't work:
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/mobile/sb/CS-
011282.htm

I'm lost, please help,

Flaviu

It may be due to the Acer machine not being compatible
with 98. Go to Acer website. You can read the Owners
manual for free for your specific model. You may have to
do a bios flash update on the laptop. But this needs to be
done with caution. I don't even know if it is possible or
available. If it is? Read the Acer's instructions and
follow them to the letter.

Try one of the Windows 98 drivers there, or even a Windows 95B/OSR2x driver. One of
the more generic Toshiba drivers may also work.

Ok, here's the deal. If I do what you said with the
windows 98 driver on the website you gave me or with the
98SE driver, when I finally boot into windows expecting it
to work I get this message. "Windows protection error. You
must restart your computer" This is the same thing I get
with all win98 drivers I've tried. I have win98SE (second
edition)

This probably means the drivers don't work at all. I think
the only driver that actually works is the Super VGA one
(look at first post)
because it actually displays info about the video card on
the adapter page when it is installed unlike the other
drivers of which none I can get past 16 colors or they
just don't work at all.

Thanks for trying to help,

Flaviu

I did. With the 95 drivers, it behaves like the default
win 98 drivers where it detects the card as 65545/546 and
it only allows 16 colors. If I set it to more, upon
restart it tells me there's a problem with my display
adapter, and it's still only in 16 colors. I am now trying
to extract the actual win95 driver from windows 95 itself,
not the ones I found on websites.

Let us know how it works.
If you can find all the files, you should be able to right-click the .inf file and
click Install, to get it loaded.
