Default can't open file

i am having trouble opening a wps file from My Documents-
after copy/pasting a picture off internet to the wps file
(i have successfully used this method previously, as not
all pictures display the download function) -and after
having trouble disconnecting from internet/ saving and
closing files following the download.
Now, when i attempt to open the file, i receive a flash of
the green microsoft word logo then the message
'Automatically update the linked information to match
source documents?'
Following the prompts succesively produces-
'invalid page fault MSWORKS.EXE at 015f:0058d597 or
'protection USER.EXE at 0006:0000575f or
'Fatal exception OE 015F:BFF9DBA7'

All I want is my file back, and i think i need to know how
to disable the affected link in the bowels of the machine.
But how do i do this? or what should i do?

What is the size of the file, and is it large enough to contain an image?
It seems to me that you have saved a link to the image rather than the image
itself. If so, the image isn't in the file and there is no way it can be
recovered from the file.

The wps file is currently 2.1M size after some years of
updating, and i can't comprehend losing it.
And, no, it's not just the image i can't 'find' - i'll
jetison it if i can find my way into the wps file - i want
to enter the registers or whatever and gain access to the
file, probably by disabling the false link

Thanks Jeff

I didn't understand how you were using the WPS file.

I don't believe there is any simple adjustment you can make to the file
format to prevent it from trying to open the link. It's likely that there
is no such link, and the message you are getting is simply the result of the
application being unable to access the file without error. The 2.1Mb figure
is suspicious - do you know whether a WPS file can be this large without
error?

You could try posting in microsoft.public.works.win to see if anyone is
aware of a WPS file recovery utility. Note that these utilities are usually
oriented to recovering text rather than images.

I've got to say that a WPS file would not be my preferred method for saving
an image collection, but I guess you don't want to hear that ;-(

Default can't open file

Just a bit more info:
I am (was) using the wps file for collecting textual
information about a favourite artist of mine and built it
to some 30okbits.
As i've learned more about things i've been downloading
jpg pictures from the internet using the 4piece icon that
pops up when you point the cursor at the picture - and
saving that to My Pictures folder. Subsequently I've
cut/paste pictures from My Pictures to locations in the
wps file text, and these have become the bulk of the 2.1M
size.
Now some of the pictures on the Net don't have the popup
icon and i've learned that i can cut/paste to my computer
and have chosen to put them in the wps file.
The problem is that the last picture i saved by direct
cut/paste has created a fault. Your description that the
file thinks there is a link is accurate. Now why can't i
tell it to be realistic and give me back my file.

Default can't open file

now i've studied the advice no. 200334 with a mixed but
unsuccessful result
i was able to open the wps file in word pad and the other,
and 1) received machine gobbledygook only-no english text
2) the computer failed to settle down and worked on
throughout the night without finishing the 'open'
operation. it didn't reach a 'convert' mesage.
So i attempted to 'Save As' and did that successfully
during the minitesimal gaps in the machine's operations,
but only achieved another file with a new name that did
all the things thatthe original was doing.
so i haven't progresed to where i want to be.

is there not an expert's way of entering the registers of
the machine and correcting a bad coommand/link?

hopefully iain

QuickView+ is a generic file viewer utility. If your problem is that the
file is corrupted (which is my guess) then it is unlikely to be useful.
However, it is easy to download and install, and it appears to uninstall
properly, so there's no harm in trying.
