Obtain the drivers (from the maker's web site if you have
no CD), instal them, and see if it makes a difference. Then
repost with more details e.g. how your optical mouse is connected.
E.g. a USB mouse is not activated until after USB drivers have
been loaded.

Message is normal at the first encounter in windows 98/98SE with a USB
mouse. You need to go further than the message.

Default Optical mouse not detected

To clarify, this occurs just as soon as the machine cranks up, long before
Windows begins to load? If so, it's an issue of "Legacy USB support", which
needs to be enabled in the BIOS (usually you press DEL or F1 or maybe even
F10 just as the first screen appears.)

Depending on your motherboard and BIOS, it may simply be that you'll have to
live with a double-start. That or revert to a PS/2 mouse.

You might also check with the mobo manufacturer for a BIOS update. But make
*SURE* you have the correct mobo model number, a good battery backup UPS,
*and* the intestinal fortitude. A screwed up BIOS update will bring the
whole world to a grinding halt and probably force you to buy a new BIOS chip
from Mr. BIOS (Unicore.) It's happened to me a couple of times

I have upgraded my BIOS a few times and like Gary warned -- user beware.
Fortunately, it was fairly simple on this machine and I actually updated
to the latest BIOS version a few weeks ago. I have an ASUS motherboard
and ASUS now has an update utility so all I had to do was download the
correct BIOS, use the update utility, point to where the BIOS upgrade
was, BIOS flashed and restart the computer. I was amazed that I did not
have to deal with DOS to flash the BIOS. (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention
that I had to reconfigure my BIOS settings as well after the BIOS was
flashed)
