Computer will not turn on
Hopefully some one can give me a few suggestions on a computer I am working
on. When plugging in the computer (without pushing the power switch) both fans, cpu fan and the power supply fans will come on as well as the front led light but the computer will not power up. Can some one give me some suggestions as to what I should check. Could the bios battery cause this condition? The battery is as old as the computer which is around six year old. The computer is an Emachine running windows 98 and the owner does not want to put much money in a computer this old. I have reseated both memory banks, the modem, and the power supply connector to the motherboard. The owner had replaced the power supply earlier today and it ran fine for a few hours and then everything went dead and not a thing would work...fans, lights or anything. We put the old power supply back in and again, both fans will run and the led light on the front panel lights the same way before the power supply was replaced. The video card is built into the motherboard. It seems like something is keeping the power from getting to the proper area to start the computer. Another thing, I was advised that for the last week or two before the computer died, the computer would start all by it self. Could this be a clue to something? I think I have covered all bases and hopefully some one will have a suggestion as to what I might check next. The owner does not want to spend the money for a new motherboard even if this is the problem. Thanks. -- Wayne |

I hate to be a bearer of bad news, but the mobo is highly probable toast.
Check the CAPS on the board to see if any are leaking or bulging. If need be use a magnifying glass and while your at it, check for any hairline fractures in the circuitry. If the owner doesn't want to spring for a new mobo, then a new machine is in order. -- Brian A. Brian, the computer is now up and running. The owner put a new power supply
in the computer and it appeared to have taken care of the problem. Thank you for your suggestion. -- Wayne "Brian A." wrote: I hate to be a bearer of bad news, but the mobo is highly probable toast. That's good to hear since 2 other PS's didn't resolve the issue. Looks
like it's time for a few returns. -- Brian A.
