usb "dial-up" dsl modem not available in "network adapters" in ICSwizard

Hi there

I've been down this road several times before, and I've even solved it a
couple of times, but cannot for the life of me remember how!

I'm running the Internet Connection Sharing wizard on win98. My
SpeedTouch adsl usb modem isn't shown in the list of network adapters
when I'm asked what device I use to connect to the internet. It *is*
shown in the list under Control Panel System Device Manager.

Instead, I choose Dial-Up Adapter (also shown in Device Manager as a
seperate device), but can't connect.

I did try binding TCP/IP manually to the usb modem, but couldn't see how.

Anyone got any ideas where I'm going wrong?

answer... I got lost a bit at the PPPoE bit - perhaps there lies the

Well after more and more rooting around, I came across this:

which pointed me at this:

which didn't work.

From hints in the first link, I looked into the ICSSetup.Log and both
the Dial-Up Adapter and my SpeedTouch DSL modem are listed. I'm now
going to try checking the file during the ICS wizard.

I note that I'm not asked if I want to connect using a Dial-Up or
Broadband connection during the wizard. I'm sure at some point during
this process I have had that option!

Meanwhile practicallynetworked made the very sensible suggestion of
ensuring the LAN's working properly before doing anything. In doing so,
I have now specified the host TCP/IP address as 192.168.0.1, the client
as 192.168.0.2, and given the client a gateway of 192.168.0.1.

In fact the LAN's not 100% there. I have a win98 machine as the host,
and winME as the client. The winME-client machine can see the
win98-host machine in full - not only pingable, but fully browsable
under "Entire Network" too. The win98-host machine can ping the
winME-client machine, but it's not there in the Network Neighbourhood
(says I have to log on). I've disabled the winME-client firewall (doing
that allowed me to ping it).
