Yep. The applet dances around just fine.

In the section on the Sun page tools, internet options - then advanced,

"Use JRE 1.5.0_01 for applet" This is checked.

Well, you said Java doesn't work on your machine, but that's a Java applet you say
dances around fine. So could you please be more specific by giving links to the
applets that don't work.

Glen, I am considering writing to the U.S. Justice Department about the case
between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft and the unfortunate in my opinion lose
of Microsoft Java Virtual Machine which is currently in 3810 build and no
more builds because of decision and last support set to expire on 31st
December 2007 -- at least I have time to try and help Microsoft and the let
the users have freedom of choice between using Suns version of Java or
Microsofts version and again it may make life more difficult having 2
versions of Java but at least it will make life harder for hackers too.

Why would you be in favor of the microsoft virtual machine? First, the build
number you mention is so old it isn't funny. Microsoft hasn't put any
effort inot the java virtual machine iun quite a while.

Next, it is technoligy directly stolen from sun. Microsoft had a license to
include it with windows and for what ever reason then they changed it to be
incompatable with suns version (hence the brach between the 2). Suns entire
goal was to have a virtual platform that was secure and were coders could
write once and run anywere. Microsoft is now soaking thier efforts into
Dot-net wich is directly competing against java in alot of areas. Even if
Sun did allow them to continue with thier version, it would be phased out by
..net in a matter of time.

Finaly, the hackers. This is the only reason i replied to your lame post.
You couldn't be further from the truth. 2 competing version of the same
thing = 2 different sets of holes to exploit, It does nothign but help
hackers. Microsofts version will be another unpatched verison that comes
with windows, running in the background without a user knowing and it will
be a primary place for attack. Microsoft i sn't exactly known for it's
security or polished products. Usualy they release somethign (besides x-box
stuff) and make you test it then patch the hell out of it. While they aren't
the only companies doing that, they are the most popular and easiest to
target, especialy with a wide open machine on a default install. Microsoft
also always tryed to integrater everything too deeply into the operating
system for various reasons. Because of this a virtual machine comprimise
would expose the entire computer to the attacker of choice. I think you are
really a glutton for punishment to want that.

One version with one maintainer means that the holes get fixed when found.
It elimiinates "problem holes" were they are trying to maintain
compatability between the two. Sun has a much better track record at the
security aspects and feature development of java too. Anyone asking to run
the Microsoft virtual machine is asking for problems.

Nice to see you again -- jazz -- alias aka ArtWilder here -- I used to post
on his machine and I think you are the same jazz that used to be really
knowledgable in this newsgroup. Thanks for the feedback. I will need to
contact Sun Microsystems for their side of the arguement as well as
Microsofts. Remember 98SE is already 6 years old and it is going strong so I
don't think an old version of MSJAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE is necessarily a bad
thing to have --- at least Microsoft should have a final critical update for
98, 98SE and ME to elimate all the security holes that have been found in
Java Version Build 3810.

I am attempting to run a program called Mobile Basic 2.1 which is located at
www.mobilebasic.com. When I try to run it, the screen images tend to be
blocks without any content. If I mouse over some of the pull down menus,
etc, the text does appear. If I move on of the data windows around, it
leaves traces on the screen. I enclosed some screen shots he

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/gemsto...SW7uCBeKjuwl.V

The third one illustrates the "traces on the screen" problem. Sometimes,
when closing the program, artifacts of it remain on the screen until I do a
screen update.

For whatever reason, it does seem to run a little better with Sun Java
de-selected, per the advice below. However, to be fair, it may be more
"different" than "better".

I selected the security defaults.

Does this help understand the problem?

Thanks...

Ken
