C-Drive locked

When I try to do a defragmentaion or run scandisk, eiher
from Norton Disk Doctor(Norton System Works in stalled) or
from System Tools,I get the messsage: 'Unable to operate
on C-Drive because it is in use by an Unknown Disk
Utility. A similar message stating that the C-Drive is
locked also appears. This problem remains even after
uninstalling Norton System Works. My Operating System is
ME. Please, can anyone help.

Without wishing to get embroiled in the dreaded 'Norton vs.WinMe' debate
regarding Norton products and their (un?) suitability with Winme, just take
a look around the news groups g

However, the first thing to try, is running scandisk and defrag in Safe
Mode.

If OK in Safe Mode, download and install ScanDefrag v5.0.

This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to
these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities
through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Defrag (and
Scandisk) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already
experiencing g
