Default Boot time warning: a labeled partition is not present. - So what?

On my WinME box, I originally installed the OS with a dedicated swap
partition (F on the main physical drive.

A while later I moved the VM to a separate spindle, for sake of extra
speed:
- added a dedicated swap partition on the second physical drive
- labeled it 'SWAP'
- relabeled F: to 'SWAP2'.

The previous, dedicated swap partition on the main drive (F: = SWAP2)
remained unused, as WinME (unlike 2k / XP) can only handle one VM file.

About a month ago I increased the RAM to a point where the VM is
little used.

I did not need some extra VM speed, so I
- got rid of the second drive
- relabeled the SWAP2 partition to SWAP
- reverted the VM file location to F: .

Now the VM file now happily lives there.

All is fine, except Windows keeps complaining on startup:

"Disk 'SWAP2' not present."

and stops for a bunch of seconds to make sure I get the message.

I thought it might be a message from a drive-relettering/renaming
utility, but this is not the case. On this machine I never needed to
reletter anything - I just changed a few partition labels.

I am also pretty sure I never ever used any application or OS feature
that referred to partitions by name, as opposed to by letter.

QUESTIONS:

1 - Do I have to worry?
[I don't think so.]

2 - If it's not too much trouble to do so,
how do I convince Windows not to look
for the SWAP2 partition?'

Thank you in anticipation!

If you really did have your swapfile on a second HD, you are still
apparently pointing to it in your Environment settings - and if you've
removed said HD, then it's no wonder that your system is complaining!!

Set the VM manager to 'Allow Windows to manage....' and then forget about it
for a few hours - then see what the actual settings are.

Thank you Noel!

First, a correction, for what it's worth: the warning is

"Volume 'SWAP2' not present"

Volume, not partition or drive or anything.

I did as you suggested, moved the pagefile to C: and let Windows manage
its size. The warning is still there afrer 4 reboots.

As I had said, I had indeed selected F: as the swap drive and Windows
had apparently toed the line. It must be something else.

My record is not that precise... What if the SWAP2 partition had been
already there at Windows install time? Where would Windows write
itself a "drive map"?

Also, I scanned the registry, and there is no reference to "SWAP2"
anywhere.

Ideas anyone?

TIA from SpamHog / Filippo

It is probably not in the registry, but in the Environment Settings - look
in MSCONFIG to check.

The bloody paths! I had never looked there!

OK, thank you so much for incidentally teaching me (after 4 years of
use and a lot of poor advice) how to properly set an environmental
variable in WinME!

You can't imagine the time I wasted fiddling elsewhere to get apps to
find e.g. the GTK libraries!

W.r.t. the missing partition: no, there's no reference to it there.
All paths lead to places that exist and contain the corresponding
files.

The riddle is still on.

The riddle may still be on - but have you removed any references to
'networked drives' and suchlike??

Noel,

Thank you for your persistence and probing questions!

- On this (desktop) comp I never had any shared drive. The missing
volume was for swap only - a good candidate for not sharing.

- I manually mount and unmount the data partitions on my laptop. I know
they are in the corresponding MRU list, but there's no SWAP2 there.
Plus, I was told that for some arcane reason sharing the laptop's swap
partition was no more conducive to satisfacton than with the desktop's.

- Nothing in "Network Places".

Does this answer your question? I can't think of anything else to
check for such like.

F
