Default Testing a NIC ?

Ok, I just installed cheap $14.99 Yahoo DSL without resorting to the

me is my inability to test if the NIC is working. Also, since this is a
laptop I have a PCMCIA NIC, and when I unplugged it yesterday and then
plugged it back in Win98se wanted to reinstall the drivers. Can I abort
or avoid such a reinstall and have it find the already installed
driver? Any other sage advice? Thanks.

Sorry, should have included the group. Try this one:
sbcglobal.help.tech.connectivity.dsl
they should be able to give you some advice

Ah, if I can find the newsfeed that carries SBC groups. I think my
problem is Win98se or the NIC or both. How can you tell if a NIC is
working?

Default Networking tutorial?

Is there perhaps a good tutorial hidden away somewhere on Win98se
networking? For example how a browser would be instructed to use a
particular network or how the bindings work?

Thanks.

You'll get a lot of good information on this site.

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

It may scare you a little once you realize
that you are about to subject your PC
to a thorough probing of its defenses.

I've always like that site too, and I also like it when I scan mine and see
this for the results: (like most of you I'm sure)
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/978/grcsu8fb.gif

If so, ask yourself if you'd rather it were done
in a positive manner, with feedback and advice
on how to close the loopholes, as this site does,
or would you rather find out the hard way.

He [Steve Gibson] also covers bindings in minute detail.

Yep it's very good, and although a bit wordy but still it's right on.
After I had done mine I made some quicker notes to do it next time.

Is the little green/red light on the card lit/blinking?? Also, you
should be able to Q your modem and see if it will let you through.
Have to ask tech support how to do that.

If your on SBC, their news servers carry their own newsgroups!

Connect it to the NIC on another computer.

I don't have a NIC on another computer. How about a wrap-around cable?
What will Ping say about that?

I am all green too with my mishmash Kerio rules! Ah, ha, ha! And I don't exist...!...

........Quote..........
Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
