Default Memory Error Message

I have Windows 2000 Professional ME and keep getting an
error message saying the operation does not have enough
memory to complete, and that I must close some operations
to perform. The only task I'm trying to do is paste some
text into a notepad doc and there are only 3 operations in
the systray (all with low memory requirements). I have
only 128MB of RAM. Could this be the problem? Any ideas?

Which operating system are you using? Windows 2000 Professional or Windows
Millennium (Win Me)? This newsgroup supports those using Win Me.

Whilst 128MB of RAM isn't particularly much this shouldn't cause the problems
you are seeing. Have you possibly limited he paging file/virtual memory in
some way?

Well, I let ME manage the virtual memory, so I haven't
limited that in any way. How do I check the paging file?
Any other suggestions?

The paging file is the terminology used in Windows 2000/XP to describe what in
Win Me is called virtual memory.

You shouldn't be having these problems with 128MB of RAM provided that there
is free space on the hard disk containing your swap file/virtual memory
(win386.swp) meaning it cannot expand in size as required.

May I suggest you check what you have loading and running in the background.
(System Information | Software Environment | Running Tasks or use a process
viewer such as WinTop or that from SysInternals.) It is just possible that
your problems are the result of hosting and running unwanted malware of some
sort.

(how about a corrupted/read-only swapfile, Mike?)
