Default identities problem

As far as I can tell, Poc, this customised version of OE (and IE) from
ntlworld would appear to be the problem (though with IE6 in WinME, one never
knows eg).

I'd like to see you (1) backup all your current OE data, (2) uninstall this
customised version of IE/OE6, and then (3) do a clean install of IE6-SP1
/and/ updates via Windows Update (requires 2 visits to Windows Update). But
WinME is a very peculiar operating system and must be handled with kid
gloves so I'm going to cross-post this to WinME General newsgroup to wrangle
into this thread my MVP buddy Noel Paton, a real WinME Pro who's dealth with
these issue, for some guidance for you.

Please continue the cross-posting (OE6 and WinME General) in your replies.
If the page address your seeing now doesn't start with
http://communities2.microsoft.com/co...es/newsgroups/..., use this link
to Communities2 web-interface which enables you to cross-post:

Very likely if the new identity hasn't been created.

"IE version 6.0.2600.0000IC" indicates you got a customized version of
IE6 (or an earlier IE version) from your ISP (IC = Internet Content
Provider), possibly from a CD. Is this correct? Which ISP?

At this point, disregard my previous post about Q330994/Q837009, as you
don't have these updates (or any others, for that matter) installed.

To correct the situation, you need to go to Windows Update (WinUp):

1. Close all running programs (e.g., Internet Explorer, Outlook
Express, /and/ your anti-virus application) and leave them closed.

2. Open one (1) IE window and use it to go to WinUp (IE ToolsWindows
Update).

3. Follow all prompts, especially if you're told you need to install
WinUp-related software, and allow WinUp to scan your system for updates
it needs.

4. Download and install all "critical updates":

a. You'll first install IE6-SP1 and reboot

b. Still in the environment described in #1 above, return to WinUp
to download/install the rest of the updates. Reboot if and when
directed to do so.

c. Updates other than 'critical' ones are optional: Only install
these other updates if you use the application the update addresses.

c. Do /not/ install any 'driver' updates! (These have never been
reliable.)

5. If the problem (when switching identities) persists, only leave an
identity in this manner:

FileExit and logoff identity

You might want to use the script on this page which will force OE to
request an identity logon each time you open OE:

http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/tips/forceid.htm

You only need one (1) script, not one for each identity.

Hm, not a good sign.

Sorry I missed your reply of the 10th (http://snipurl.com/6c94).

Are you having any browser (IE) problems (e.g., homepage or search
hijacked)?

Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO,
then copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

**Also state your Windows version.**

I followed the instructions re using script files on
insideoe.tomsterdam. As the two GUIDs were already
established in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities I
created 2 script files, 1 for each GUID and saved each as
a .vbs file

This has not fixed the problem; regardless of which .vbs
shortcut I use to enter OE6, I am only seeing the
emails/inbox configurations etc for the main user

I have tried replacing the "main identity" which might be
prone to such problems, however, when I "add new
identity", although a new GUID is saved into
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities, it appears that
OE6 doesn't recognise it. (so i don't want to follow the
instructions right through to the end, importing from old
identity and then deleting it - I might be left with no
identities at all)When I try "Swith Identities" in OE6,
there is only one identity shown: Main Identity. Nor can I
use the command "Exit and log off identity" as it is not
available

Q330994/April-03 and Q837009/April-04 Cumulative Patches for
Outlook Express (which you you prolly have installed) both
contain a bug causing the problem you and many others are
having. Until this bug is addressed by the OE Team, we're
advised to always leave an Identity via FileExit and Logoff
Identity and not use FileSwitch Identities.

Others have found the Force Identity Logon, which essentially
does the same thing, works for them:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/tips/forceid.htm.

If one of your Identities is the default 'Main Identity', which
is much more prone to such problems, you could try replacing it
with a new Named Identity (FileIdentitiesAdd new identity) in
hopes of finding more reliability. Import messages from the old
Identity before deleting it (FileIdentitiesManage Identities).

Default identities problem

this may be two silly questions ... but, here goes

1. if i uninstall customised IE/OE6 and attempt a clean install of IE6/SP1, how do I access Windows Update site to download the clean version (i.e. if i have uninstalled the IE browser first)?? - how do i get to site without a browser?

2. if i copy all the files in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities say to a flash drive, i take it that i can then restore the files back to the C drive after installing the clean version and import the saved data (dbx files) back into clean OE via File - Import - messages???

thanks for your continued assistance and patience

Not silly in the least.

Installing IE6 didn't remove IE5.x, poc. Upon uninstalling IE6, you'll be
returning to your immediately previous IE version (if all goes well). Or
you may have to take more drastic measures; we'll see. In any event, you
won't be without a browser but for a very few minutes.

Speaking of which, there's something you can do to prepa Download a full
copy of IE6-SP1 from Windows Update Catalogue to use later on.

Downloading Internet Explorer...
(for a later, offline install)

Yes, you'll be able to backup your OE data (though I'm not sure you can use
a flash drive) and will be able to import it into OE once everything's
straightened out.

thanks for your continued assistance and patience

YW, poc.

But I thought of something else while typing this reply: Create a new
Windows Profile (aka Logon) and see if OE will open successfully to the
default Main Identity and if you can add a new Named Identity within that
Windows Profile. (Cross your fingers, figuratively, at least.)

kudos to you PA Bear, created the new Windows Profile, this enabled addition of new named identity, and i was able to reconfigure the second identity with its original email address (had a look at logging on in original identity, the problem persists i.e. can't access 2nd identity etc - BUT WHO CARES, can use 2nd log-on!!!!!)

so after 2 and a half weeks of torture ................. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR
