Java
Even with firewall and anti-virus disabled, I can't open the file
jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-s.exe, which is the latest version of Java 5.0. In fact I couldn't even delete it without rebooting first. Anybody know what the problem is? |

Did you get any error message? Did you try downloading it again? My guess is
the reason you couldn't delete it before restarating is that it was "still in use" trying to start. -- Gary S. I did delete the first one after rebooting and then downloaded the file
again. I tried to locate a different source, but wherever I looked, say on filehippo, I got referred to Sun's website. What happened in both cases is that I double clicked it, the cursor changed to active but nothing happened, and then after, say, 15 seconds it just returned to inactive - no error message. I stored the file in a folder with older versions (of 1.4.2_x) and they open with no problem. Plenty of time elapsed, minutes, before I tried to delete it. Now this is interesting: The same web page listed in google, www.java.com/getjava , takes me to two different pages depending on whether I'm using IE, or something else (I was using Mozilla). The Mozilla page file I couldn't open was 15.4MB. The IE page file is 7.1MB. My previous installations of this are about 16MB. I would try the IE download it except that I don't feel I know the whole story - during previous installations, the install program asked you whether you wanted to associate java with IE, Mozilla, or both, so why wouldn't the files be exactly the same, let alone the same size? In any case, no matter what you use to download an executable, you're still opening a saved file with the same OS, so it should open or, as you suggested, let you know that something is wrong. I think it's a bad file. Why else wouldn't it open?

I've got a copy that's been used on several IE machines, both IE6 and IE7.
It's 15.4 MB. All I can say is clear your caches, delete the file and try again. Then try again tomorrow. -- Gary S. Forget the above. My error: IE online vs. offline installation. I can do an online installation I guess, but the save-and-open method should also be made to work. |

You are using the wrong link. Go he

I didn't say it wasn't, but I could probably come upwith a few reasons why
that doesn't mean that the file on the server is bad. I just gave ways for making sure the file is gone from your system before trying again and to address some of those possible other reasons it might not open properly. Have you tried the IE installation yet? Note that there isn't any Mozilla/IE dichotomy. The file is the same for both. There are only different files for different OS platforms. Try this copy, if you like: http://grystmill.com/shared/jre-1_5_...ows-i586-p.exe -- Gary S. Thanks for the file. Doesn't open however.
Since I need a version of JRE on the machine, I just upgraded to 1.4.2_13 from v._12. I tried 1.5 when it first came out, didn't have much luck with it, but wanted to try it again. Gary S.
