I have also noticed that while I can view the properties of all the other
Win98 pcs when I attempt to see the properties of the central PC I get the
message "the server does not accept remote requests". However I can view its
properties from the win98 pcs. So presumably WinXP must be formulating its
request in a way which is different to that used by the win98 pcs.

here is something to try ...turn off all your computers ...then just turn on
your offending master browser.

let it settle in for a few minutes : then turn the rest on and let us know
what happens ...

The problem has been resolved.

Thanks for your help. The problem was discovered to be caused by a
half-uninstalled Norton Internet Security on the central Win98 pc. This
prevented the WinXP pc from seeing the Win98 file shares on it but they could
be seen by other Win98pcs.
NIS could not be removed so it was reactivated, but without the security
set, so that it did nothing. That's it.
