An upgrade from original Win98 to Win98SE shouldn't destroy data.
However, it's prudent to back up your data before making any
significant change to a computer, in case of unexpected problems.

Both original Win98 and Win98SE can network with XP. However, it's
hard to find wireless networking equipment that works with either
original Win98 or Win98SE.

Here's an alternative: don't upgrade, and get a wireless-to-Ethernet
bridge, which can connect to a wired Ethernet adapter on any computer:
