Ben had a good idea. Have also you tried the Bootlog option on the menu? If not, try that then look at the Bootlog.txt file in the root with Notepad. See what's there after the mouse loads, it should be near the bottom of the file. You could copy/paste from the mouse down and post it. Glen,
That is correct. The only items checked in msconfg a system.ini win.ini Startup itms is not checked, though it is partially selected after attempting to boot the PC as Ensoniqmixer auto-enables itself. - Andrew "glee" wrote: ....and when you attempt the clean boot, you open msconfig, on the General tab click Selective Startup, and uncheck these items: Process config.sys Process autoexec.bat Process Winstart.bat (if it is not greyed) Load Startup group items Click OK, then restart and you still get the Setup Wizard upon restarting....correct? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Boone" wrote in message ... See if you can get rid of the Symantec installer information by using the Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290301 " The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not: • Remove Windows Installer. • Remove files of any programs that are installed by Windows Installer, such as Microsoft Office 2003. The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does: • Provide a dialog box where you can select one or more programs that were installed by Windows Installer. You select the programs on the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs. • Remove the files and registry settings that make up the Windows Installer configuration information for programs that you select. If you use this utility to remove the Windows Installer configuration information for your program and you plan to reinstall the program, you should reinstall the program in the same folder where you originally installed it. This prevents duplication of files on your hard disk or disks. Bill,
Thanks for the suggestion: When I do an F8Bootlog.txt start the PC fails (goes into Win98 Set-up Wizard). Cancelling out of that causes the PC to shut down, so I then have to start in Safe Mode. The result is that the Bootlog.txt file is for the second start in Safe Mode (I think), but there is another bootlog.prv which from the .prv extension and date-time stamp is from the Bootlog.txt start-up attempt. Below is the info you suggested looking at: Init = Mouse Status = Mouse driver installed InitDone = Mouse Init = LoadStart = atm32.dll LoadSuccess = atm32.dll LoadStart = DISPLAY.drv LoadSuccess = DISPLAY.drv LoadStart = V128SYS.DLL LoadSuccess = V128SYS.DLL InitDone = DISPLAY Init = Display Resources InitDone = Display Resources LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\serife.fon LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\serife.fon LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\sserife.fon LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\sserife.fon LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\coure.fon LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\coure.fon LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\symbole.fon LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\symbole.fon LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\smalle.fon LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\smalle.fon LoadStart = DIBENG.DLL LoadSuccess = DIBENG.DLL LoadStart = DIBENG.drv LoadSuccess = DIBENG.drv LoadStart = TOOLHELP.DLL LoadSuccess = TOOLHELP.DLL LoadSuccess = user.exe LoadStart = MSGSRV32.EXE LoadSuccess = MSGSRV32.EXE Init = Final USER InitDone = Final USER Init = Installable Drivers InitDone = Installable Drivers Init = TSRQuery InitDone = TSRQuery Terminate = User Terminate = Query Drivers EndTerminate = Query Drivers Terminate = Unload Network EndTerminate = Unload Network Terminate = Reset Display EndTerminate = Reset Display EndTerminate = User Does anything stand out to you? Most of these did nothing noticible.
A couple of comments: C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\PowerReg Scheduler.exe Was located in C:\...\Disabled Startup Items c:\windows\mstask.exe Was located in C:\windows\system\ C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETWORK ASSOCIATES\MCAFEE Was missing entirely C:\Program Files\Intruder Alert 99\ia99.exe Was missing emtirely [Not that I expect it makes much difference.] I also did your suggestion to Run all the items in c:windows\tasks Most started and then shut down immediately. Except for: Maintenance and Cleanup which Run Comments? Thanks for you input. Glen,
Thanks for the suggestion. In Safe Mode I installed Installer Cleanup, and ran it from StartProgramsMS Installer Cleanup. The only items listed we Installer Cleanup XML Parser & SDK So, I was unable to clean any additional Program Installation info. Ideas? Thanks. The patch I suggested reinstalling is only 665 KB....download it on another
