Default "Restart" instead of "Shut Down"

My system is running Win98SE.

When I try to "Shut Down", it does a "Restart" instead.

"Disable fast shutdown" is already selected.

Anyone know how to fix this?

"START, Shut Down"... can it be the "bolt" is in "Restart"? Then, that
is what will happen.

Shutdown Problems
This article has a link in it to pages full of articles on shutdown
problems.

http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnse.php Shutdown problems, SE specific.
http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm Shutdown problems.

Definitely, try... "START button, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button".
Check "Disable fast shutdown", if there. The item won't be there, if you
have downloaded a certain patch from Windows Update.

I tried some of the steps in the following link:
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm
Then gave up since it seemed to focus more on
system freeze problems.

But, I didn't realize that there was a Win98SE specific one:
http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnse.php
I'll have to try it out later.

Also, I haven't tried the shutdown patch yet since
some posts stated that it can cause problems.
Is this true?

Adam,

Sometimes an Anti-virus feature loading at boot will cause that.
Disable that feature and see if it helps. It's possible other
program's features may do the same.

If no help try he

I backed up the partition and tried the Shutdown patch,
which did not help. Thanks anyways.

You mean Q239877, the Shutdown Supplement...?...

Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement

It appears it is installed in this Win98SE, shows up in "MSInfo32,
Software Environment, Software Updates". Also, all it's files versions
are my file versions, (except for tshoot98.chm-- I was gypped on that
one). I do believe Compaq installed Q239877 into this 7470. (I'd have
had to do it twice, the second time, after my hard drive crash of 2001.
Surely, I'd remember.)

I can't actually say I've never had a shutdown/restart problem. But it
is rare... well, it certainly isn't frequent, anyhow... well, it
happens...
(a) Sometimes, if I haven't shut big apps first, like OE.
(b) A couple or so "reboot's to complete" failed.
(c) Sundry other times.

While there is no uninstall for it in Add/Remove Programs, I have

Yes, the first installation of
the "Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement"
didn't fix the "Restart instead of "Shut Down" problem.

I read somewhere that installing several times might
get it to work. I'm not sure why though. But,
I'll give it a try and if that doesn't fix the problem,
I'll just restore the partition.

You'll see others mention refer's to a web page for troubleshooting.

In my case nothing helped UNTIL I read the comment about "Allow LPT Interupt
Sharing" as a sub-checkbox under "Legacy Emulation Enabled" found under
"Settings" tab in the "Properties" dialog for my PCI128 soundcard in Device
Manager's hardware list.

It wasn't until I unchecked said box that the problem went away and she now
shuts down or restarts properly as expected
