OK, thanks for that reply - so therefore have you tried 'remming' out the
various lines (one at a time, if necessary) in system.ini to see if you can
determine the offender?

Rapidly running out of ideas g

In the mean time, I'm still trying to get my head around a previous
statement you made:-

OK I found the offending file. It's the System.ini file.
I unchecked it and used selective startup, and I had
sound on startup, including the WinME
"fanfare". I can play CD's, MP3's, everything.

Not quite too sure *what* you unchecked (in what application/utility)
and *how did you 'use' selective startup? - in msconfig or the DOS start
menu?

Mart

I used msconfig and checked selective startup, and then unchecked all the
options underneath selective startup one by one. When I unchecked

system.ini
and restarted the computer, I had sound.

I haven't done one line at a time yet.
