W 98 Installation Error
I am building a computer. Near the end of the Windows 98
installation I get the error message: "While initializing device NSIS: Windows protection error. Hit any key to continue." When I hit a key the DOS W 98 Menu screen comes up with Save Mode highlighted. Hiting Enter brings up Safe Mode but that's all. This error is covered in Microsoft's Knowledge Base article 312108 that states that it's caused by a CPU that runs at more than 2.2GHz, or faster, causing the timing calibration code in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) to divide by zero. A fix is available but is not given in the article that states that Microsoft Support must be contacted to get it. Does anyone in this group have the fix? I guess I'm just cheap and hate to give Bill $35 to get it. |

I guess I'm just cheap and hate to give Bill $35 to get it. It is the NDIS fix, not NSIS: and free (by email, not posted publicly) if you phone one of the free MS Support lines and ask for it, citing the KB number. Consider my experience. Was sent the fix, DL it (with password) to floppy. It turns out to be a Windows pgm, not DOS i.e. we must instal Windows before it can run. But the instal process (on a new P4 system, speed 2.8 GHz) will not go, keeps failing at the first or second reboot citing NDIS error. One evening half listening to TV I tried again three or four times to instal in conventional manner -- and this time it worked, completed OK for Win98, drivers updated, and updated to Win98SE. Then I run the NDIS fix: "This patch is not written for your version of Windows." Reported this to MS (twice 10 and 15 days ago): no answer: but the fast PC runs OK -- go figure. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

W 98 Installation Error
lol, okay, a tip, reinstall windows 98 with the following
attached to the end of setup.exe /nm so it should appear like thisx= the drive letter) x:\setup.exe/nm or X:\setup.exe /nm (either way ti shouldnt matter) what the /nm switch does, is it says to the cd, do not lookat the minimum requirements, and just continue the install. My fatehr runs a 3.0 ghz dualboot (with 98/xp) and he had to end the /nm at the end to get the installation to continue (and eh was well over minimum requiremnts) good luck, Bill -----Original Message----- I am building a computer.
