Default optical mouse problem in 98SE

My wife works in MS Word 97 on a PC with Windows 98SE.

I replaced her mechanical MS PS/2 scroll mouse with a Microsoft PS/2 "Basic
Optical" scroll mouse. W98 did not need to change the mouse driver when I
replaced the mouse and the device manager shows the mouse to be working
properly. Problem is that the optical mouse intermittently malfunctions.
Within Word for instance, suddenly it would no longer move the cursor
requiring her to close and reopen Word, after which the mouse works fine for
a while.

When a year ago I had exchanged her mouse with another MS optical mouse the
same thing happened which suggests that the problem is with W98, not the
mouse.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Upgrade the driver through Device Manager?

Upgrade the driver through Device Manager?

I tried that but there was only one driver for it and therefore there was
nothing to upgrade it to. Where could I find a newer driver. I went to the
Microsoft website but could not find any drivers to download for the "Basic
Optical Mouse". They have intellipoint drivers which they say are not
compatible with their own Basic Optical Mouse but do not have any drivers to
download for the optical one.

I have a Microsoft 5 button wired intellipoint optical mouse that didn't

work that well with the driver on the installation disc but I was able to
upgrade it with device manager. Maybe one thing you could try is instead of
going to the Microsoft site click the other radio button that says something
like "show all available drivers for this device" and select a different
one, but you might run the risk of sending performance in the other
direction. An even better idea may be to take it back and exchange it - it
could be a bad mouse.

Jeff - go to Logitech's website and download their software for their
optical wheel mouse. I also have the Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse and
found that Microsoft does not support it. I tried using it with Win98
1st edition and had no wheel function. Since I have a Logitech optical
wheel mouse and the CD that came with it, I installed MouseWare 9.76
for the Basic Optical Mouse and it works like a charm. Win98 sees it
as a Logitech Compatible Mouse PS/2 (I'm using the PS/2 port). I now
have a control panel with full mouse options, and the wheel scrolls
properly. Hope this helps. -jp
