Networking between Win98 and WinXP
Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to network a laptop
with Win98 to a laptop with WinXP or is it next to impossible? Thanks |

Any computer that can access the Internet can access any other computer that
can access the Internet. The Internet is nothing more than a large network. So the answer is, of course, yes. Visit www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm and apply Tip #1 to all PCs and enjoy your network. Carey "ckuzy" wrote in message ... Carey Carey, that web page is titled "Tips to fixing Windows 95, 98, 98se, ME, 2000 and XP network problems". Tip #1 is titled "HOW TO RESET YOUR NETWORKING CONFIGURATION". Why should someone who's setting up a new network follow a list of 23 steps that require complicated procedures such as adding protocols and editing the registry? It's a new network. There are no problems to fix. Nothing needs resetting. Ckuzy, setting up a new network is easy. Simply run XP's Network Setup Wizard on each computer, and it will automatically make all the right settings. I've written a web page showing how: XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...rksetupwiz.htm Connect the computers to each other in one of these ways: 1. Directly, using a crossover Ethernet cable. 2. Indirectly, through a network hub, switch, or broadband router, using two regular Ethernet cables. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questions addressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups. To setup the network I need to run network setup wizard on my Windows 98
computer, but we don't have a Windows XP CD-ROM. My girlfriend downloaded it to her computer from her university, Also, her laptop doesn't have a 3.5" disk drive, so I couldn't make a setup disk from her computer when the wizard prompted me. Isn't there somewhere to download the wizard? "Steve Winograd [MVP]" wrote: In article , "Carey Holzman" wrote: "ckuzy" wrote in message ... The file containing the Wizard is in this file on a Windows XP computer: C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe You can copy it to a floppy disk, CD, USB thumb drive, or any other storage medium to move it to the Windows 98 computer. You can even E-mail it. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Hi Steve.
I don't assume the computer is not infected with spyware or that the user hasn't already modified default network settings. Going through the standard routine may or may not work depending on the condition and configuration of each PC. Using my steps may be overkill in your eyes but, using my steps, the condition of each system is reset whether it needs to be or not, ensuring that the process will work the first time, for anyone with any 98/98se/ME/2000/XP PC or combination thereof.
