Default Can't open IE

Yikes! I've tried everything I know, and still can't get
Internet Explorer to run. I *can* open a jpeg which
displays under IE; it just won't connect with the Internet.

The Problem:
When I try to open Internet Explorer 6.0 under Windows 98,
I get this error message for Explorer:
This program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down. (Yet no problem opening Explorer)
Upon clicking Close, another error msg appears:
An error has occurred in Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer will now close.

Background:
When this first happened yesterday, I ran Ad-Aware & Norton
Disk Doctor. Got rid of some malware and fixed a couple of
registries. Still no luck. Then I changed the desktop to
"View as Web Page." The white screen of confusion appeared,
and I clicked Restore Desktop. Then...wallpaper appeared on
the desktop with a logo for the Boston Red Sox! How did
this get on the computer? Wife is on Sox mailing list,
could have been an email attachment (the wallpaper's
properties showed the Red Sox' URL). The problem then
disappeared till someone closed the Red Sox wallpaper.
We again can't open Internet Explorer and the same error
msgs still appear. I am posting this via Netscrape. All
other apps seem to run ok.

What I did this morning:
Tossed the Red Sox wallpaper.
Ran Norton Anti-virus, updated this a.m. (no infections)
Ran Norton Disk Doctor (OK)
Ran Ad-aware and tossed all cookies for good measure. (no
malware)
Downloaded and installed IE 6.0.2800 from MS site.
Downloaded Explorer.exe from H-P recovery disk.

Still can't open IE.
Threw up my hands in despair and came here.

What think you? Maybe there's a corrupt or missing .dll?
Should I do a complete system recovery? Thanks for your
ideas. --Bill

Can you or can't you *open* the program, Internet Explorer?
You wrote that you "*can* open a jpeg which displays under IE; it just won't connect
with the Internet".
But then you write "When I try to open Internet Explorer 6.0..., I get this error
message.." and "Still can't open IE"......so, can you or can't you open the program?

When you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button
instead of the "Close" button, and post back with the exact details word for word,
up to but not including the memory registers.

When you ran Ad-Aware, did you first install the latest updatws? What version and
build of Ad-Aware are you using?

Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe
Unzip to a folder *other than* your Desktop or the Temp folder, double-click
HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or
similar).
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at:
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

In your post, please state your problem clearly and what you've done so far to fix
it.

The folks there will tell you what to remove.

See the "housekeeping" they ask you to complete before you post your log:

Glen,
Thanks so much for the reply. I'll try to be as clear as
possible.

But then you write "When I try to open Internet Explorer

6.0..., I get this error
message.." and "Still can't open IE"......so, can you or

can't you open the program?

When I click on the IE icon or choose IE from the Start menu,
1. the error msg from Explorer appears
2. when I close the error msg, another
error msg appears, this time from IE telling me an
error occurred.
3. At the same time, the minimize/undo_minimize
button "Microsoft Internet Explorer" appears in
the toolbar.
4. however, an IE browser window does not appear.

So, no. I can't open the program in a fully functional way.
When I click on a jpeg, it opens up under an IE window,
tool bars and all, but I can't link to any favorites on the
net.

When you get an "illegal operation" error message, click

the "Details" button
instead of the "Close" button, and post back with the

exact details word for word,
up to but not including the memory registers.

updatws?

yes

What version and
build of Ad-Aware are you using?

Ad-aware 6 Personal, Build 6.181

Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these

locations:

I'm on my way.

Also, just after my original post, I downloaded and ran
Spybot Search & Destroy (where did BDE come from?) It got
rid of a bunch of junk, but still no IE.

Best, Bill

Perhaps scan that wallpaper for a virus as it appears to be
the source of your problems.

Borland Database Engine, probably from some installed
software.

be the source of your problems.

Good idea, but I deleted the wallpaper last night.

To all: I am running through the aumha
procedures--housecleaning, etc., and will report back when
I receive word on the Hijack This log file.

Cheers/kippis!
