When I defrag or scan disk it starts over. How can you
tell which program is running so you can stop it. I have
closed everything I can think of. By the way, what is
safe mode? Thank you for you help.

Safe Mode is a barebones Windows mode, used (hopefully) to
correct/troubleshoot problems that cannot otherwise be done
in a full-fledged Windows mode. Only the essential apps
will be run at startup namely: Explorer and Systray. you
will still have your mouse, but that will be taken over by
an aspect of Explorer, sort of a generic-no-frills mouse.

As far as defragging, the only thing needed would be to make
sure that your screensaver is turned off. I forget where,
but there is a registry tweak, IIRC, where you can set the
screensaver to be turned off when defragging and on when
done, though I believe that only can occur in safe mode,
whether I read that here or on the WWW, I don't recall.
